Not quite dead..

A coincidence of disasters

What is it with bad things happening in groups?

The "Foghorn" server died today. That's the main web manager for WinCustomize.com. When it's down, WinCustomize is quasi-down because the DNS has to be set to go to another manager.  So we're up but not really fully up.  The other servers are now taking more load and they're already stressed.

Meanwhile, back at Stardock HQ, the team was barely able to do much about this because its ISP went down (and still is down as I write this) so that no one at Stardock could actually get on from the office. Totally unrelated.

Next Wednesday the new mega server we've been talking about will finally go on line.  Weeks and weeks of prep work has been going on to prepare the way for the monster to come on-line.  It will be interesting to see how much difference it makes.

Anyway, stay tuned. Sorry about the flakeyness today.

I know what you mean Brad...the past two weeks or so has been great on my end(I live in Huntington Beach CA) at least: very fast & responsive! Today the 31st I've noticed the big slowdown. I can't imagine WHAT it will be like when the MEGA MONSTER SERVER is in place & running because as I said it's been great till "Foggy" gave up the ghost! Thx for the space to sound-in!!

Great job in the midst of it all! At least we can access the site and get where we want.
Took four minutes to load WC from my desktop. Timed out a lot. Page-hopping 30 secs or more.

You admins juggle pretty well. Thanks!

Bad things seem to happen in groups of threes, this has been my experience.
Things will get better, there is no doubt in my mind!!!
Thanks for keeping us up to date on what's happening!!!

Glad to see WC is still up even though it's slow and nice to be informed about it. As teddybearcholla said, "thanks for keeping us up to date."

Best of luck. At 1AM last night I was trying to download a file and the page(s) simply would not open. It had been slow all evening but it finally ground to a complete stop. How quickly we forget the days of dial up and continual disconnections where we were lucky to be able to download anything. Now we get upset if it takes more than a few hours to download a GB of material.

Reporting from Bethlehem, Pa...Very much looking forward to this, or any upgrade for that matter since right now I'm dead in the water. Haven't been able to upload anything in the past 4 days (been having related problems for about a month) for starters...page loads are like torture...pretty much running the spectrum of errors.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes, Brad, and hopefully all will be well again soon.
I've had fast page loads for weeks now, with very few errors, if at all, but this morning (Oz time) WC was slow in comparison. Oh well, it can't be helped and I can live with it 'til you get it sorted.

Thanks for the heads up, it is much appreciated.

The ISP being down has meant emailing hasn't been working so neither has the moderation [properly, since that requires auto-emails, etc to be sent].

It took me 40 minutes to approve 2 Winamps and a Litestep update....and the email about the faulty screenshot on a 4th upload is probably still lost in the ether somewhere.....[after 8 minutes or so I decided the page had been loading 'long enough']...

Earlier today we put WC up on a test server as a temporary solution.  I have spent the better part of tonight getting WC up and running on a more reliable web server. So we should be pretty close to full power.

I do know that the jobs for calculating daily stats are not currently configured so please give us a day or two to get those jobs configured properly.

If there is anything out of the ordinary that is not working properly please post the issue(s) here so we can take care of it.

Brad, Pat, Dean (everyone else). . . thanks for all the extra effort trying to get this all up to speed.

I want to apologize for hitting WC so much throughout the day and adding to the bandwidth. It's family now.

I still think that RomanDA is to blame in some way and should be slapped with a trout, just in case.

I'm astounded by your ability to critique such things as the quality of this website. I would suggest you start with a) a spellchecker, and b) better control of your shift key.

The truth of the matter is, Stardock has some of the most talented professionals working with them that I have ever seen. I often wonder about the insane skills it takes to keep a site this massive running properly. It might not work ALL the time, but it works well MOST of the time. I'm not really going to get into it, but I dont agree with your statements about the quality of products that stardock uses. I'll let Brad do the talking on that.

Um.........shut down the forums. The only thing needed is room for windowblinds and stardock products anyway. Give people more room to share work and download others hard work. Kind of the way it all started.

fasterus, Maybe your system isn't all it's cracked-up to be...I was on DSL (about 1.5Mbps) which provided ample speed; since switching over to FiOS(fiber optics) everything is jet speed loading almost instantly:(100Mbps) - no waiting - MOST OF THE TIME...Once in awhile I'll have a slow down here, but almost never. Could be your ISP and/or area as well.

T-Man...I am still unable to upload anything. I still get red X's as images and then it just sits in moderation. And the site is also still slow for me...and I'm on broadband.

Um.........shut down the forums.

So...UMMM...where'd ya go then to speak your mind on WC related matters?

The forums are an essential/integral part of WC....they give members a voice, an opportunity to post news events, topics of interest and to voice opinions, including yours, obviously.

There's life in the old girl yet, she just needs the odd boot (size 11) every now and then.

For what it's worth, the download server is STILL out. Since I just had to reinstall several apps, this is causing me great headaches.

One word: archive
SDC has teh function built right in. It makes sense to use it.

Dang it.....THERE'S the problem.....

If I told you once I told you a million times....

SIZE TWELVES.....

Your reply only makes sense IF IT WORKS. Which it doesn't. Using SDC to download has been broken since yesterday and is still down at this time. I simply provided the previous post to give others with the same problem (more than likely everybody) some time reference point. Reading the original posts, one MIGHT conclude that the problem had been fixed. Obviously it hasn't

Since I just had to reinstall several apps,

"Reinstall" implies that you had teh opportunity to archive earlier.

One can archive at any time, not just when downloading a new version. [File | Archive Applicaton | Selected Application/Entire Application with skins]
I have a CD with all the apps archived from SDC. I update it twice a year or so. (I also have autoarchive turned on).

I know it doesn't help now while the servers are down . . but it might help next time.
