Patch Question/ Ship Upgrades

I was scopin out the patch notes and it says

Players can choose to upgrade ships and either have the functional components removed by default or have them stay.

Where do I swap that over to have em stay? Its always a pain when I'm tryin to upgrade my units and I forget whatexactly it had. Also.. whats it mean by functional parts? Modules and what not, or structural extras, or both? Its bums me out when I try to upgrade one of the base ship designs, and It gets stripped to the frame, my colony and constructor ships end up looking like wet dogs cause I'm not real famaliar with the pieces yet, and I can't find any that fit in a cool way, and I can't seem to recreate the original design. I have a hard time adding mass too my ships, bout all I can add are wings and antenna.

Ditto here. upgrading starting from the bare hull is a bummer.

Idea for the next patch: In addition to starting an upgrade from the last configuration let us have a small dropdown under each existing component listing alternate choices for that component series. For instance if you've got a Laser Mark II, but you've researched up to Laser mark IV, the dropdown would show lasers Mark II, III, and IV as choices to swap. Anyone like?

Definately.

I have vision problems as it is, being able to tell just what a component already is and upgrading within tha catagory with a click would be nice. For added fluff, it would also be nice to know at what level of miniturazation is current.

I found it, Its pretty neat, I guess I should have tried to look a little harder before asking ha ha.. ha... Anyways, its a little problamatic sometimes. Some of the weapons I was sticking on one of my ships when I had the option checked .. I put a gun in the wrong place, and I removed the module, but the gun still appeared stuck to the ship. Had to turn the option off to clean it off the hull.
