(another) plea for clarification of combat

Would someone at Stardock please clarify the details of ship combat? Posting the relevant source, or pseudo-code to the same effect, would be ideal. Of course, precise, unambiguous English is just fine.

If it's policy not to reveal the inner workings of the game, please give the argument as to why this decision was made.

The manual does not say anything about how it handles the case where the attacker has two or three different weapon types, and the defender has defenses against one of these types.

Are all the different weapon types added up into a single large shot? Or is each weapon type calculated against the appropriate defenses?

Say a ship with 2 missiles and 2 beams fires on a ship with 2 beam defense. How is the damage then calculated? Beam fires against the 2 beam defense, missile against sqrt(2) defense? Or, since one attack is matched, is the armament seen as if it were 4 beam? Or 4 missile?

I don't know a much as you, but I do believe if say, a ship has 2 beam and 2 missile, and a defender has say 2 shield, then the attacker would fire with the power of 2 beam against 2 shield and 2 missile against sqrt2. Then, the damage shown on the summary is merely all of that mathematics added together. To make it easier, I think each attacking type of rolled against the ships overall defence one at a time until beams, md, and missiles are all used.

I doubt they want to hide the numbers made in the battles, rather I believe they support the idea of backing up each number with its source. IE the explanation of approval, taxes, planetary upkeep all the gist.

I'd like to know too, so I can balance my fleets. Sometimes it seems to make no sense at all.

You can see my confusion here, which nobody answered: https://forums.galciv2.com/?ForumID=162&AID=115204

Why on earth would you have 3 different weapon types in a single fleet...

I put different weapon types on single ships, forget fleets, those are such a mis-match of stuff.

This would be good information to have though...

Um. The manual is neither complete nor accurate. It's a rough approximation at best. I have read every piece of documentation very carefully, from the manual to the wiki to as much of the forum as possible. There are unanswered issues. If you want, I'd be happy to list them.

Some good questions about combat.

I have trouble working out the figures especially in cases where I am the only one with a Def type in the fight but I am the one scoring 0's over and over while the AI scores high. I swear it sometimes looks like the battle readout is "offset" and the scores I should be getting are appearing for the AI.

But then I only look at the att/def readout of the ships. So when my 15 beam / 4 point def ships score repeated 0's against enemy 6 missile / 0 all def ships who regularly score 4, 5 and 6 I assume there is alot more going on than the numbers on the display.

The manual has to be wrong. According to the manual, all of the attack values of all of your ships in a fleet are added together in one big roll. Which, if you watch the combat viewer, obviously doesn't happen.

You think that's bad, I had a battleship with two nano rippers and T W E L V E ultimate invulernability fields whose shots kept bouncing off unprotected hulls. Every return fire did maximum damage, so I lost a battleship and escort for no damage to the enemy. I kept having battles like that in 1.1 beta 4/4a/4b to the point that I think something was glitched.

I got so pissed off that I came here and made a really angry post, which I regretted almost immediately.
