cant build ships

hi yall, just a few questions if i may
I just got the game yesterday so yes im lost, but how can i build better ships than the defender and the other 2 or 3 you get,
I cant add weapons, shields, or anything to them, even though i have the techknowlege to do it. I get my arse blowed up by 1 shot ships that attack me.
I keep getting this message that my milatary is 0 it should be 100 but I cant build up my military because i dont know how, is there someone that can help me with this pls?

You tend to get the default ships fairly slowly, so I suggest try to design your own.
Also, military is based on how many ships and stuff you have, so have planets WITH starports (you need a starport) build stuff.
