Planetary invasion .?

So I just got back to playing my first real game of GalCiv2. I was doing well but had not gone to war with anyone yet. When I get planetary invasion and I can build my first troop ship I load it up and attack the weakest player. To my surprise when I landed I had 500 troops and they had 60,000. Guess who won. Seems like I would need a lot of troop ships for that. Whats the deal with invading planets.? Do you typically need 10's of landing craft. I only had enough tech to put 3 ships in a fleet.

If they really had 60,000 population (60 billion IIRC?) then even with the best invastion tech it would probably take several attempts to conquer the planet.

The first invasion tect gives you 500 (500,000?) troops per module. The Advanced tech gives you 1000 per module, or 1 billion troops per module and they fight a lot better with more invasion options. The Shock Troops tech, even more so.

However, if the planet really did have just 60,000 and your 500,000 lost, then the planet had some major defense and or soldiering bonuses going on. I'd be curious to hear what their population was at the end of the battle.
