Custom Galaxy creation?

First, a comment:

I just recently picked up this game and all I can really say is BRAVO! It is very well thought out, fun, and the AI can be an absolute bastard. So many things to do in so many ways...as cliche as it sounds, its never the same thing twice.

Now, a question:

Is there any way to create your own galaxy beyond the standard "random" settings in the game?

Well, there is a way. You can go to your \Stardock\GalCiv2\Data\CustomMaps directory. There are all those custom maps. Open one of them with an .xml editor and have your way.

Unfortunately, if I'm correct, is there no map editor currently, although GalCiv1 had one (with the expansion pack IIRC).
