Me and my Spam...

You emailed me? Sorry I missed it..

http://www.barracudanetworks.com/ns/?L=en

How much spam do you get?  A lot? Let me give you an idea of how much my email account ([email protected]) gets.

Now, you may say, what the hell are you thinking? Why are you putting your email address out there? Am I an idiot? Well yes but that's a different issue entirely. I don't do the [email protected] type thing because as Darth Vader said in Return of the Jedi -- "It's too late for me..."

Long before spam became a real problem, I was on Usenet and zillions of other sites. I used my email address in the clear (like lots of other people).  This year marks the 10th year of my email address.  In that time, I've gotten on every spam list known to mankind. I've had people purposely sign me up for stuff (flamers - don't bother, I'm already signed up to receive it).

To give you a statistic, yesterday I received 3,914 emails. A typical day.  Previously the spam catchers on our server would get about 90% of the spam. Pretty good right? But I'm still stuck with about 400 email per day.  Of that 400 email per day, about half of it is spam. Of the remaining 200, about half of it is not spam but are lists and notifications or promotions that are legitimate (i.e. junk mail but not spam).   So of the nearly 4000 emails I get, about 100 of it is from people who want a response, presumably that day.  Since I've only got about an hour or two per day to dedicate to checking email, that means I don't get to a lot of people. And I apologize.

But that's getting a little better.  We just purchased the Barracuda. It's a hardware device that sits in front of your mail server to weed out spam. So far, the results are pretty satisfying.  I still get spam, but far far less.  Same with everyone else.  It's about 3pm today so we're about half way done.  So far, our server has received 10,449 emails total. That's everyone.  Barracuda has blocked 8,419 of them because they're spam. 1,378 were blocked because they contain virii. 217 were allowed in but were tagged as probably being spam but it wasn't sure.  That leaves 418 that it thinks are legitimate (and about 25% of them are still probably spam).

For you numbers fans, that means 96% of the email we get is either spam or virii that is can tell is spam or virii. The remaining 4% still has some spam in it, but it's still more effective (so far) than anything I've used before.

Yep spam sux alright as your email addy gets passed round other spammers as i've found out ,tho it's only the odd email and then i just report it as spam to my ISP and they'll add it to their bock list , for anyone out there for future reference go get ya self a yahoo account or similar and any new sites you sign upto use that as you can delete the account if necessary and make a new one and use your main account for friends and trusted sites.

And I thought I had it bad with 50 emails a day. Most are spam, some are hatemail, and the rest are probably from my mom.

Too late for me, too....though not 'quite' at that same order of magnitude.

I used to get a 'heck of a lot', but, with the help of mailwasher [and a number of other mail watchers] and an ISP that appears to be doing 'something' I'm down to just 4 legit and 9 unsolicited/virii/you-need-a-bigger-penjs.....since I hit the hay [2.30AM] to now [10.30AM].

The 4 emails include 3 relating to things here and the fourth is solicited spam, ie. a note from hotmail 'staff'...

There was a time when I'd average 100 per day and of those 2 or 3 were legit....

wow, that's alot of spam...

i'm trying out a free service from a site called Blue Security (Link)....i send them my spam (using an extension from thunderbird, but you can report your spam directly from Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail etc)...they send out automated cease and desist notices to the offending spammers...it takes a few months to work, but then they say you get a lot less crap in your inbox...you can also protect your domain....i'm a couple of months in, and i do seem to be getting less....

Well, that certainly explains why you never replied to the emails I sent you a couple of months ago

Can sum1 tell me how 2 get 1 of these 'bigger penis' e-mails?

Glad to hear you have gotten help to stop "Most" of the spam. The college I work for has been using BARRACUDA for awhile now (6-12 mo) and it has made a major difference in the amount of junk we used to get.

Yes, 95 % spam, same as here... Mailwasher and gmx do their job quite alright, but that's an option for 200 mails a day.

I feel your pain, I have had my domain for almost 10 years as well. My email volume after spam filter and such runs around 300-400 emails a day as well. Its a big waste of time, because at some point I might actually have an email so just recently I created a catch-all account. It seems to have worked. Now I let the catch-all take the flack and I only have to sort out around 100 emails or less per day.

I am having the same problem as you, except worse. I will give you a hint on how much spam I get in a day... When I go to my 2.5 gigabyte gmail inbox, everyday my storage space RUNS OUT. I fall for a lot of offers and some I have tried to enter more than once. THESE PEOPLE TEXT MESSAGE ME FOR GOODNES' SAKE!

Time for a new gmail account.
