What would make AI surrender to me?

Drathi are on best terms with me (friendly) and the most influential civ Thalan are at war with Drathi. If I join in in the war to grab some of their territory, when start losing Drathi won't surrender to me. If I sit it out and Drathi start to lose, what could I do to make sure they'll surrender to me?

I am strongest defensive militarily and have 2nd best infulence, if Drathi would surrender to me, I'd have enough territory to be able to take Thalan with conquest or influnece victory. If it doesn't work I could really fortify and do a technological victory. Thanks.
