Is the game "open ended" ?

sorry if this has been asked before but i had trouble spotting a search feature. (first time on the forum here)

is the game "open-ended" in that you can drag your game out indefinitely so as to allow for all the tech research or are you pretty much lead through a plot/story where your game ends after a certain point? what i'm looking for is something that MOO2 had in that you could build up your empire and then just sit back and watch as the other races tried to wipe you out. you could drag this out as long as you wanted to (or until the enemy got powerful or lucky enough to take you down)

i'm not looking for a mission based starcraft kinda thing.

thanks!

Well, as long as you turn off the other victory conditions (other than Military), you can pretty much drag the game out as long as you like - just don't conquer the last enem(ies).

Doesn't sound like fun, but hey, whatever floats your boat!

The game is open-ended,
but you do get declared the victor if you own like 80% of the map. Usually, this is a good thing because you probably won't feel like dragging it out when you have been playing for days already.

Only if you have Influence victories turned on.

IF you get too strong the AI might just surrender to you (like they did in the last game I was tryin gto milk).

I have conquered every single planet culturally a couple times before... Since you don't win with influence % it is counted as a military victory.

The answer is yes. The new game and metaverse buttons create an open ended sandbox game . The campaign is a series of mini-games with specific goals and a storyline linking them

The search feature is on the left side of the page, under recent posts.
