Error on Close, Jerky Movies, and Crazy Numbers

I have an AMD Athalon XP 2800+, an Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 AGP, Windows ME, the latest drivers, and version 1.10X.


Roughly 50% of the time, after I close the game I get this error:

Ddhelp has caused an error in NVDD32.DLL

It seems to be completely random, and not based on any in-game actions, but the last portion of debug.err has a few possible clues. I have copied the closing portion of the file, starting once the quit messages are posted:

The third and fourth to last lines stand out to me as possible clues.


The second problem I have is with the in-game movies. The intro is fine, but the in game movies (first anomaly, civilization dead, etc.) have major framerate problems. The sound plays normally, but the movie will freeze on a single frame for an extended period of time, often over ten seconds (but sometimes as small as half a second), before it moves on to the frame it should be playing. The frames that do get shown are synchronized with the sound, and the movies seem to have no other issues except for the slide show effect.


The final bug that I have found involves number temporarily jumping to insane values, but going back to a reasonable range after a few turns. This seems to be related to an event occuring, such as the time I invaded a planet and had its population jump to either four trillion or four quadrillion, depending on whether the main screen or the planetary report was more accurate, but then it dropped down to a more resonable .5 billion after a few turns. Another case of this bug occured when I made peace with my long-time enemy, the Arceans, and then had their influence mysteriously jump up and fill the entire galaxy for the next 3-4 turns, forcing me to lower taxes to keep my planets loyal until the Arcean's influence returned to normal values. There may have been other cases of this, but these two incidents were very obvious. I will take a guess that this bug will be difficult to track, since unless influence and population are not recalculated on every turn (or there is a lot more going on than meets the eye when they are calculated), there isn't any obvious reason for the numbers to go so high and still be able return to reasonable values later on.

For your movies, you should be able to fix that by dropping your anti-aliasing setting in video options. Also, you need to post your WHOLE debug log file, not just that little portion. I'll check back to see if that fixes your movies, and for the rest of your debug info.

I already had AA off. All that turning it off did was to let more than one frame of the movie play (not to mention letting me boost my resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 with no negative side effects).

Okay, did a little looking around (google) and looks like your direct draw is conflicting with your gfx card drivers possibly. You have the latest video drivers (81.98) but might want to try a clean install on them, a previous driver, or try the new beta driver (84.xx). Also, saw somewhere that sometimes old sound drivers might cause problems with bink video too, and your sound drivers are from 2003. Hopefully that might take care of your first two problems. Your third problem about trillions of people and huge influence afterward is a glitch I have seen reported several time already so hopefully it will get addressed sometime. Did you install GC2 from download or retail CD? If these fixes still don't work, there are a few other things you can try.

As far as I can tell, there are no new drivers for my sound card, since it is the onboard sound that came with my motherboard and I can't find drivers for the onboard sound on my motherboard. Other motherboards- yes; my motherboard- no.

I installed from the retail version.

Sorry, really tired right now. Um, well it wouldn't hurt to give the beta drivers a try some people have said it helps with their other gfx problems. They're at this Link I'll check this thread again tomorrow, need some sleep.
