Questions about the game

I've just got this game and I've got a couple of questions;
1) When I build a Starbase what does it effect? Does it add to the global production/research/etc values or does it only affect planets within a certain radius. If it only affects planets within a certain radius why does the ai always rush to claim resources that are nowhere near any of it's planets.
2) When I create a new galaxy, is it balanced in any way or is it just completely random, I've had a couple of times when I've been shoved in a corner with no usable planets nearby, this is quite annoying hwhen other races have most of the map.

My only real problem with this game is that there is very little in game help and some things are hardly explained at all. I still like it but it's a bit annoying having to fumble around in the dark not knowing how things work until after you've done something.

Other than that it's really addictive, well done Stardock.

Benefits from the mining starbases benefit the whole empire. For other types of starbases you can click on it to see its radius. I think it's 10 squares.

I think the maps are random, but I'm not sure. Every race's starting solar system is always the same.

I'll let #1 alone
For #2, it's pretty much random, which spices up things. If you end up without too many planet it forces you to use a wholy different strategy than if you have a bunch of good planets around

IF you don't like your startig position, hit Control + N to recreate a new map without having to go back to themain menu!
