Upgrading ships?

I was just curious if there was a way to upgrade a ship design without having to start from scratch. Like, if I wanted to use the current Defender, but give it upgraded lasers or something, is there a way to have the Defender design on my screen, just switch out the lasers, and be done with it?

As it stands, I have to build the whole ship from scratch.
Thanks.

Good question! Id love to know the answer to this too as its frustrating upgrading ships and then be shown a bare hull on the screen.Mabe this is something they could implement in the next patch?

the upgrade button... maybe? its in the shipyard.... allows you to change a ship to your liking.

The upgrade button will leave all your structures intact, but you have to re-add all the components, engines, etc. What I would like to know is how to upgrade my flagship, is it just a matter of finding the proper tech?

To upgrade your flagship, you need to research the medium hulls tech, as that happens to be the hull size of your basic survey ship.

And your flagship has a sensor module for anomolies, so you would have to research Survey tech as well. You can't upgrade the stock/core ships and if you want ships with your new techs (obviously) you will need to build them from scratch. If you are unable/unwilling to do that then just research the prerequisite techs for the newer core ships.

NOTE: I have been having a bug where I can only unlock the core ships from the beam weapon line, and reported it in the Glitch thread a few days ago. Honestly though you can always make better ships in the editor...

Alternatively you can purchase the upgrade whilst a ship is in space (it will be out of commision for a week or two whilst upgrading itself) for a number of credits. Or when you have performed an update to an existing design, after asking you to save the new design over the existing one you will get an oppituinty to upgrade all existing ships of that design that you own for a (usually very large number if you have several ships) number of credits.
