Playable races in campaign mode

I'm about to buy GalCiv2 (huge fan of the first one) and I know that you can play all the races (even create your own) when you generate your own galaxy. But can you play as any race (plus your own) in the campaign mode, or just humans?

you get to play humans, but at the same time can customize the human race it in everyway cept starting techs, so in a way you can play any race in the campaign.
