Weird stuttering...

About every 15 seconds or so the game stutters for a few seconds--the graphics freeze but I can still move the mouse, and the sound skips. I did all the obvious stuff like update the game, video/sound drivers etc...any ideas on how this would be fixed? (getting really annoying)
