What a weekend.

The week before last I had a tonsillectomy and a UPPP done.  I have been resting for the past week and starting to feel better.  I had just started to eat more "normal" food.

Then Saturday night I was laying in bed and tasted something in my mouth.  I spit and it was bright red blood.  I went to the sink and a great amount of blood was coming out of my mouth.  Obviously one of my incisions have come open.  So about midnight my wife is rushing me to the hospital and calling my doctor.

Of course when we get to the ER my wife has to fill out the paperwork.  Meanwhile, I am now at the point of panic because blood is coming out my mouth and nose, and it's starting to choke me.  After about 10 minutes I am called back and put into a room.  Now here comes everyone to take blood, blood pressure, etc.  Another 10 minutes later and my doctor arrives.  At this point I'm having trouble breathing and start to have a panic attack.  He tries to stop the bleeding in the ER room, but I have a terrible gag reflex and he just couldn't get far enough back.

So he says he has to knock me out and take care of it.  So within a few minutes the surgical team is down getting me from the ER.  I have to say the surgical team at about 1 a.m. is pretty hillarious, and a bunch of nice people.  So in the pre-op room the nurse starts hooking me up to things, and the anesthesiologist tells her not to and just take me to the operating room because it's 1:30 a.m. and nobody is waiting.  While I'm on the table I get to hear the interesting and once again hillarious people talk before I'm put out.  He puts an oxygen mask on me and is talking to me.  He says he's ready and I feel a terrible burning sensation all throughout my body.

The next thing I know I'm waking up in recovery with my wife, doctor, and nurses all looking at me.  They all smile and I fall back asleep.  Then I wake up again and the doctor says he had problems with my blood pressure, but everything went ok.  I'm taken to a room at about 4 a.m., and try to rest.  I spent the rest of the weekend in the hospital under observation until today.  So now I have another week off work, and another week of laying around and drinking liquids.

I hope I didn't bore anyone, but I needed to share my experience.

:)

I understand that a tonsilectomy is one of the bloodiest of surgical procedures, so post-op complications are gonna be unpleasant and scary.
Glad to hear you got to the hospital quickly and you're okay now, ID....I hope all goes from from here on in and your recovery is complete this time round, also fast.
Take care and get well soon.

I'm glad you're okay. I had mine out when I was 3. The older we are the more chance of hemmorhaging. The doctor should have told you that. After the age of 21 it is almost always going to happen. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

ID, Glad to hear they took good care of you.

I had the whole UPPP about 8 years ago for sleep apnea (I used to stop breathing over 20 times an hour, they told me.) It was also about 6 months before I was able to pronounce the letter "K" without consious effort. In the end it was well worth the discomfort of the surgery.

My younger son had his tonsils out a few years ago, and had the same experience that you had. Two days after the surgery, he started bleeding. I walked into the bathroom to find blood everywhere. Even though the surgeon had told me that one or two percent of the patients experience post-operative bleeding, there is nothing to really prepare you to find your son's blood all over the place.

Long story short, they had to put him under again to re-suture him up, and all ended well.

Hope your recovery goes well.

See, that's why my tonsils stay put where they are. They will not be going anywhere nomatter how many times the doctors hint it 'might be advisable'. I'm not found of people with sharp instruments drugging you down. All though my hernia operation a few weeks ago went fine I'm still apprehensive about being prodded with sharp instruments.

I hope you'll recover without any more drama. All though, we have been getting quite a bit more news reports here due to this.

Good luck!

I used to stop breathing over 20 times an hour,

For round half a century now I've stopped breathing....ooh....about 1800 times every single hour......so 20 is just chicken-feed...

That was one of the reasons I had the UPPP done.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.  I really appreciate it.
