You can click on "more" on the lower left of the screen. Other than that, no, nothing you can do.

I think that this tech tree is not big enough, i'm a technology guy even in other games...

I t WOULD be nice if you could zoom out of the tree and see the entire tree or a larger section of the tree at one time.

I wish there was some sort of explanation as to what benefits there are. I don't understand what most of the stuff in the tech tree even does.

Er. You should see a little button in the bottom left of the tech window that either says MORE or LESS. If you DON'T see the top portion of the tech window showing a explanation of the tech, it's bonuses, and what it leads too... click that button.

Again, if ALL you see on the tech window is the tree, look for that button. It might make life a little easier.

I will admit, having the poster from the CE helped me get familiar with the color schema and basic order of the techs.
Which is partly why I think a zooming option would help clarify it all.

There is, PSX. All stat bonuses, new buildings, new ships, new ship componets and new starbase modules are listed under each discovery in the tech tree.

IMO the tech tree is way too simple. Never do different tech lines converge, only a little more than half the discoveries give you a benefit, and when they do it's generally exactly the same as the last discovery in the line but taking up one less space or giving you a couple more research/manufacturing/morale points. Sure it limits the ability of a tech race to completely outclass a production race like MOO2 had problems with mid-game, but it feels a little limiting to know that spending those points in research does little except net you a couple more space points on a ship after attaching weapons than a race that spent points in getting an economy that could support twice the amount of ships you have.
