XP not resetting on level up?

This can't possibly be a feature... can it?

It appears that upon leveling up for the first time, a starship's XP bar does not go back down to zero, which means it will level up again each time it is involved in a battle. This creates extremely powerful ships very quickly. I looked briefly to see if this was a known issue and saw nothing, so apologies if it's been reported.
