Defending with starships?

Hi i have following problems:

First i havent found any way how to add ships into starbase defence ( tried guarding, sentry ). I moved my fleet into same spot where is my starbase but when enemy battleship attacks my base i see none of my ships providing defence.

The second problem involves colony defence. I have many ships orbiting my planet but when enemy makes his move against my planet i see that only one of my ships join defence. That gives enemy quite huge advantage ( being able to take out my ships one by one ! ).

I have played the game now only for few hours and i am quite satisfied except those problems.

For colony defense, research planetary defence, then build orbital fleet manager on each colony. THis will allow
all ships in orbit up to your logistics ability to fleet defend your planet

Starbases are on their own, they can't be grouped with fleets.

I feel that Starbases should be able to have aid from your ships for defense. It just dosn't feel right to stand-by and watch as your people are slaughtered when there was a fleet to assist.

If you're having problems defending your SBs, just intercept enemy fleets before they get there. You're better off taking the initiative in battle anyway.

I don't get what you're saying.... if your fleet/ships are on the startbase and someone attacks, then the fleet will be the first unit to fight [assuming its the strongest].

Do you mean you wan't a fleet which is a few squares away to come and defend the starbase automatically?

They DO, you must build the correct modules though. So build the ship assist defense modules and defend it manually with fleets.
