Mystery slider in ship design?

In the ship design screen, below the 3D model op the ship and directly to the left of the parts ‘remove’ button there’s a slider. What is the purpose of this slider? No matter how much I slide the slider, I can’t see any effect

Any Ideas?

Its a "size" slider that only has effect if you currently have a part selected.

Not ignorant, dumb seems more fitting

I haven't got the time to download the tutorilas until last night. But is was to late to watch any of them by the time the download was complete. So i kinda was expecting some answer like this
