Upgrading stacked ships

How the heck do I get the options to "upgrade" or "construct" with ships that are stacked? All I get are the ship icons, and I have to move them to their own square before I can access those options. This just wastes movement and it seems like there should be a better way.

There isnt for now. There is already a huge thread about possible game improvements that includes this. Please read other posts before creating your own. Hopefully Stardock reads the other post and makes the needed changes.
