Saving custom ships

This has probably been covered but since I can't find it i have to ask:

Is it possible to use designs created in one game in a new game? If so will they just appear in the build list as technology becomes available....or what? I'm still on my first game and I want to know if all the work I put into customizing ships is permanently saved.
