BUG: Software mouse pointer disapears after 10min of play

If I use software mouse, after about 10min the mouse pointer disappears. Both times it happened in some menus. First time in planet management, and second time in diplomacy menu. The pointer is not visible even when you exit the game, so I have to restart Windows to fix it. I did not have this problem in beta (though I did not play the game for 3 month). Hardware pointer does not have this problem...

i had the same problem yesterday

@Stardock

I also saw this happening regularly (in early betas and the released version)
This clearly is a NVidia bug but maybe you can put some "pressure" on them to get this finally fixed.
It also occurs in Windows or in other games. For windows you can set "show pointer trails" to get an idea
where the pointer is. (You might have to deactivate this and activate it again.)
Unfortunately this does not seem to help for any game that had this problem. (-> Reboot required. )

Hi, I had the same problem too. The mouse visually freezes in the screen but the actual mouse is invisible and you can find your way out of the game by highlighting the option "Quit" (press escape first). When I quit the game the same problem still goes on in my desktop. Reboot needed. (happened with software mouse option)

The firt game i launched, my keyboard just shutted off (i had to reboot too) but never happend since.

(I have a Nvidia GeForce 6600 GT / Athlon 64 3200+ / 1Go ram).

I've never had this happen for any other game (and I've been using NVidia cards for abour 3 years, I've had the same latest drivers since ).
I had this problem happen twice in about 6 hours of play. I had to use the keyboard to shut down and reboot. Luckily I had set my auto-save to 5 turns.

Tonight I'll try the hardware cursor (as well as setting my auto-save to 2 turns )

Does it happen in both fullscreen and windowed mode? Do you have any programs running that change the Windows mouse cursor?

I've heard of it occurring in both full and windowed, and from players who both have and don't have specialty cursors.

I myself lost the mouse in windowed mode, no specialty cursor.

There was another thread with a lot more examples a few pages back.

Use the hardware mouse cursor option.

I wonder if they're using custom mouse cursors outside the game.

No custom cursors here. I also saw it happening when I was just running Office but playing games seems to trigger the bug most frequently.

not running in window not running special cursors, get same problem as above.

running xp pro and also an NVidia 6800 - I too have not got this alleged NVidea disapearing mouse prolly anywhere else.

No custom cursors but I have had my mouse freeze on 2 different occasions after clicking on a build command. These both required reboots.
Both with my Logitech MX-100o wireless and my MX-518. Both USB and plugged into my Monitor.
GeForce 7800GT with the latest drivers.
Other than that the game is sweet! (Love the victory music)

I did not try it in the windowed mode. I have no mouse related programs. In fact I use generic Microsoft drivers for the mouse. There were no other unusual program running (except for normal background tasks like anti-virus). I never ever had this problem before, and I did play lots of different games, so I do not think it is Nvidia problem. I have GForce 6800GT.

I have win XP, Nvidia 6600GT, normal windows mouse cursor, and yes mine went invisible too. I will try hardware mouse option tonight.

Previously posted that in other thread, but think it more suitable here:

I also got a 'mouse' bug. I have P4-3200Prescott/i875p/2Gb RAM/GF6600GT/Logitech Pilot Wheel Mouse WinXP Pro/SP2, all drivers up to date. I notice that when i use mouse wheel to scroll into windows lists (like components in ship builder) there is a high probability that mouse stop responding (cursor visible but not moves, buttons work) It can be cured only by F4 and restarting system. I do some experiments, and in my case it happens only when i often use mouse wheel. When i try to avoid it use, i successful play four hour in a row without any problem.
May be some incompatibility with Logitech mouses? (i don't use third part drivers/software for mouse - only standart mouse driver from Windows, no colored cursors, windows themes too)

I've had this problem too...The only other time I've seen it was occasionally in World of Wacraft, pre-patch 1.7 or so...

I'm using a microsoft wireless laser mouse 6000 + nvidia 6600GT...

Ive never seen this before except this game. however, you dont need to reboot, if you go to the windows display control panel, you can slide the troubleshooting slider one notch to the left, that gets your cursor back.
But its still a apin, as the hardware cursor option made no difference to me. This seems mroe like a game bug than a driver bug, as all other games are fine with it on my system.

Alright, I've had this problem as well, but I have a suggestion for a possible work around.

If you're using Windows Media Connect (I use it to share files with my Xbox 360) exit out of it before starting up GalCiv2. This mouse bug has yet to happen to me (knock on wood) if I do this before playing.

My system is:

AMD Athlon64 3400+
Geforce 6600GT AGP
1GB RAM
SB Live! sound card
Kensington wireless optical scroll mouse

Why am I the only GF5600 user with this problem?

I wish we could figure out the common thread here.  It seems to be Geforce cards between 5600 and 6800 but we have lots of machines like that.

I asked some friends at Firaxis to see if they'd run into anything like this and the only thing they could suggest is that maybe Alt-Tab was involved somewhere.  Were any of you alt-tabbing back and forth maybe?

It's really a bizarre issue.

Ooo, now there's a catch - I don't know for sure if I alt-tabbed, but as I was running in windowed expressly to be able to chat w/ friends (Don't worry, I recommended the game to all of them! ), it's very possible I was doing so.
Yes, I alt-tab every 20-40 minutes. Been using the hardware cursor workaround with no problems.

XP home; GF 6800GT; Logitech optical wired mouse; 2.4 ghz p4; 1gb mem; vanilla cursor; all drivers/patches current.

I have had the same problem as well. In game failure, which continued onto normal desktop. Not running in windowed, Geforce 6600gt. Not using custom mouse cursors. I did have the stardock desktop running- and I have seen this problem before in another game, I believe "The Sims", where you couldn't launch the game or something if you were using a desktop mod such as WindowBlinds. I did get an error box popup- "WTkernal not found" or something to that effect.
Update: I turned off the custom desktop (the one that comes with the game), and I still got the problem. You have to quit the game, and go to your mouse options, and select "mouse trails" to even see your mouse again, which doesn't fix the problem. After turning on mouse trails, I went back into a game, where the mouse was still missing, then exited. The mouse trails option had been deselected! The game is obviously conflicting with the mouse somehow....

Does anyone know if the issue is resolved with the patch?

Thus far, as far as anyone knows, no, but people ARE complaining less
