New Ships - What is the Number?

Anytime I create my own new ship, it always places a number after the name of the ship. Why is that? Does it mean something? Kind of annoying seeing my ship represented by its name + some number. For example, if I create something called Warbird the name turns out to be Warbird21.

Just curious...

That only happens when you *build* a new ship. It's basically just to identify your ships--if you got a news item saying something happened to "Warbird", you'd have no clue which one it was talking about.

You can rename your ships as you please after you build them (even enemy ships if you really want to, and all planets too). There should be an icon on the right side of the titlebar of the contxet area at the bottom of the screen, click it and you'll get a prompt for a new name.
