How much food is enough?

Maybe I'm missing something, but how do I tell if I have enough food production to meet the needs of my population. I don't see a graph on there, and according to my math, the 55 mts of food I produce is only enough for 55 million colonists. Also, do I have to produce food on each world, or can I produce it centrally and have it shipped around? Does this require freighters as in MOO2?

Each planet produces food for its own citizens only.  Also, there's a typo in some (all?) of the farm description texts; they should say they support X billion people.  Therefore, in your case, food production of 55 mt/week should be enough to support 55 billion people.  However, there are other limits to population growth: no planet can support more than 100 billion people and lower class planets can support significantly less than that amount.  For more details, see this thread: https://forums.galciv2.com/index.aspx?ForumID=162&AID=101879
