Random Astronomical Events

I know that there are story based events (precursor kind of stuff) but are there random astronomical events/disasters? Like a star going nova, or something like a magnetar explosion?

Things like this could alter a star system or a corner of a galaxy, similar to a natural disaster (volcano, global warming) could alter the map in a terrestrial 4x game. Are these in, maybe as a toggle choice (random disasters on/off)? Or perhaps planned to be in expansion?

Just a thought. Can't wait to play the game.

wouldn't let me edit the link above.

nope. there are no novas and such. An expansion could introduce some natural disasters but i wouldn't count on it.

I just beg of Stardock, if they decide to add disasters to PLEASE make an option to turn them off. It sux playing for hours only to have to throw in the towel because your jewel system blows up for no reason. I mean, really! How many times has the Earth blown up? None I imagine, unless we're just memories in some sort of program like the Matrix or something.

Well I like random events, but I also agree that they need to be toggle-able. Like in Civ 4, sometimes I like barbarians, sometimes i like raging barbarians, sometimes i like no barbarians at all.

Stars have very predictable life spans, and one going supernova (though natural causes) without millions of years warning makes about as much sense as driving a convertible through space. I feel planet based natural disasters and a galactic recession are good enough.

One game that did supernova-type natural disasters very well was Spaceward Ho! Yeah, your planet was going to explode, but the game gave you ways you could save your planet, or even stripmine and then evacuate the entire populatuion before it went KABOOM.

If you want it so bad, make an event mod that removes all population from a planet (or something similar, I've not examined it to see what sorts of things you can change through events in GC2). If you want it, use it, if not, don't. Everybody's happy then.
