I Have an Ibanez!

Well, I finally got to go out and pick out a new guitar today, so I can resume my hackneyed attempts at playing the durn thing. I had scoped out a Yamaha at one store that I considered my "fallback" option. It had the guitar, a gig bag, picks, a strap, an instructional DVD, and a tuner (a must for me; I can't tune it very well without one).

So I headed down to the local music store today to check out their selections. I had already decided that i'd prefer to have a starter pack which includes everything you need. As I asked the salesman, he pointed me to several good starter packs: one a Fender, one a Yamaha, one an Ibanez, with similar accessories.

While all three are quality guitars, I was torn between the Fender and the Ibanez. As I was checking them out, the salesman pointed out another package that, instead of a gig bag, had a HARD case (it was about $70 more than the one with the gig bag, and was a slightly better quality guitar). The hard case would eventually be a purchase item anyway, so now I was down to two guitars, both made by Ibanez, one was on my list because it was black, the other because of the hard case. I chose the one with the hard case.

Now to get on to the business of playing.

And since we have an indy gubernatorial candidate with a musical history as well (Kinky Friedman), it could be interesting indeed. Maybe I should invite Kinky over for a jam session and see if I can get his endorsement...lol!

Gideon . . . good choice. Fenders will never be as good a guitar as an Ibanez.

I don't consider myself an expert on guitars, but I know a bit (especially acoustic guitars; my father is a collector of them - he has five - and has passed his obsession down to me). Ibanez is a guitar that will sound better for longer than any Yamaha or Fender, especially if we're talking acoustics. I own two Ibanez guitars - one acoustic, one classical - and in the price range, they are the best buy.

My other guitar, however, doesn't even belong in the same category . . . it's a hand made Nowland, $5000 fatty dollars worth of guitar.

But good luck to you and your music! Fight the musical fight and eventually you will impress the ladies . . . and/or constituents.

I agree with San Chonino, Fender is a good guitar maker, but Ibanez will serve you a lot better for a lot longer. Fender's high end guitars are great, but the Squier line (manufactured by Cort anyway) isn't as good as most lines out there.

You will also be more happy with the hard case than a gig bag. Gig bags protect your guitar against accidental scratches and rain, but do little else. They also wear out faster and (at least to me) are more of a pain to get your guitar in and out.

Don't sweat getting the tuner either. I am more than able to tune without one, but with one is a lot quicker. When you get to the point that you want to play along with your MP3s, CDs or even jam with friends, electronic tuning is almost a requiment.

Congrats on the Ibanez. Acoustic man here. My baby is a Martin Guitar Limited Edition HD-40 Tom Petty. Saved a long, long time for this but it was worth it. With a set of Martin medium strings this sweetheart rings out crisp and clear, and the action is as soft and easy as butter. (Good, now that age has brought a little arthritis to my fingers).

I also have a second guitar for messing around. Strangely enough it's made by Fender. Not really known for their acoustic guitars, this one, circa 1975, is pretty decent and serves me well when I want to hammer away uncontrollably.

Yeah, I was pretty stoked at the price on the Ibanez (the tuner and the hard case were pretty much throw ins at the price to sell a higher end guitar. I may not know tons, but I DO know Ibanez's reputation for quality in acoustic guitars is VERY high. While I did spend a few minutes drooling over the Takamine, I knew I couldn't justify it (yet, anyway), and I'm BEYOND content with the Ibanez.

And, in just a few short minutes with the guitar I already learned something. When I was tuning before, I would pick the string, stop, adjust, and pick again until it got in tune, making it a long, tedious process. By the time I got to the "D" string last night, however, I discovered how to do it right (repeatedly picking while turning until you hit it). I was pretty proud of myself for that epiphany, as I had previously spent too much time tuning in practice sessions.

Sometimes it's the little things in life, ya know?
