BootSkin Plus in Beta for ODNT Subscribers ?

In SDC I noticed a BootSkin Plus download link in the ODNT section.

I'm running now with no issues, although since no one else has posted this, have I gotten it in error?

No...

As far as I'm aware it's something that's been 'happening' for a while....even though GalCiv2 has taken much of the 'work-focus' of late....

Then again...I don't see it there at the moment...so perhaps it was 'premature'...

Stardock is also working on a BootSkin Plus which will allow users to apply true color boot screens (1024x768x16.8 million colors) but has no release date on that version.

Basically we had almost finished a BootSkin that allowed for high resolution/high color depth boot screens (i.e. 1280x1024 with 16.8 million colors).

But it never got finished.  In the last few weeks before it was ready, Microsoft hired the lead developer.  Since the whole thing was written pretty much in assembly, no one else could realistically just take it over (i.e. it wasn't feasible anyway to do that).  So it sits in perpetual beta.

Yes, it works with 1024x768 and "True Color"

No progress bar support that I know of, though.

I have made a few for it, and all of the old BootSkins work fine.
The about box claims it is version 1.04

Nooo! Argf! Gaaah!

hm.... Wonder if Vista will come with a 1280x1024 16.7M colour bootscreen now... õ_O

Any chance that we could have a play with that perpetual beta? *big puppy eyes*

Well, it works fine for me so I don't see why Stardock shouldnt.

I know! Let start a peti... o_O ...what? O_o why is everyone giving me that look?

Like Brad said, it's stuck in beta which means Stardock can't really sell it. Releasing it for free will result in support needed and would be a drag on the company. Kind of a crappy situation but here they are.

"unsupported Beta" is what SDC claims.

Yes.
Once it is installed, it never leaves.

I wish it had a progress bar support for the hi-res skins...

But none of that explains why it was temporarily available for ODNT subscribers, and then disappeared.........
