It also doesn't make any sense that the starbase can't fire it's ship-support weapons in it's own defense. I always just pretend the "military" modules are command, control, communications and intellienge facilities; it makes much more sense than the starbase firing lasers at ships five lightyears away, and would probabally have more an effect on space battles than a few extra weapons, anyway.

4) Custom ship designs are great but there needs to be a better way of managing custom designs. When I get to a point in a game where I need a custom ship, I create one. I can't see the ones I've created before if I haven't reached the same tech level. If I created a ship as a different race, I can't see those either. I end up reusing ship names and overwriting my old designs simply because I'm lazy at naming ships. Yeah, It would be

This is kind of a nitpick, since it's something that's hard for even a human general to do, but I feel like the computer needs to be better about keeping up a strategic reserve to deal with the possiblity of a two-front war. The latest war in my current campaign is a good eaxmple, though it's happened before: I'm playing on "tough". There's a tense situation on my border with the Arceans. We have both built up large fleets, and it's uncle

Diplomacy: Diplomacy is nearly useless if you turn off tech trading. I often use it early in the game, to make money by selling tech, or to keep up technologically without actually doing any research of my own. Technology is the best 'currency' in the game; it will buy you much more than actual money at much less cost, without being as risky as selling the computer ships. So, with tech trading on, Diplomacy is so useful it borders on an exploit.

The AI in "The Godfather" does learn. If I kill too many of a familys members they declare war on my family and come bombing my stores and rackets. The AI in Gal Civ 2 learns, too, in that sense. I've got fleets of missile/chaff ships hovering near the Drengin border guarding my influencer starbases. Gradually, I get to watch the Drengin's missile boats being replaced by beam/chaff ships. It warms the heart.

Only the Terrans and Drengin have the fully upgraded AI in the beta - other races have the new APIs, but not the algorithms to use them to their fullest potential yet, I believe. The Drengin in my current game certainly didn't make any stupid mistakes (other than going to war with everyone else because I asked them nicely). That would help explain it. If I get time for another game before the real 1.1 comes out, maybe I'll set up a th

I'm playing on intelligent. What I THINK is happening is that early in the game I tend to focus more on mobile than static defenders. The computer see that I have undeffended planets, and sends transports, but doesn't think that I may have fighters zooming around. So it loses all it's transports. Later in the game, when my deffenses are more through, I see swarms of fighters, instead, which is good.

"Smart AI" is kind of an oxymoron. As a long-time veteran of strategy games, I can reasonably expect to take a game out of it's box, intall it, and be able to kick the computer's butt tactially in anything like an equal battle. But some AIs are better than others, and Gal Civ II is better than average for it's generation. I actually thing the tactical AI in Civ IV is better - I've seen the computer recognize and exploit my weaknesses rather

Not an error, but upgrading a custom freighter design removes the trade module (leaving the ship with 0 spaces full) without removing the trade ability! I guess it' not too cheesy to be able to make super-freighters, but it might extend to other designs, I haven't checked yet.
