Something interesting happened when I did that. The initial loading screen was up for about 10 seconds (with the lovely Drengin face) and the game then CTD'd silently there. Reinstalling now. After reinstall, ship select CTD issue persists. I thought that it might when I first loaded into the game and my custom faction and settings were still available. I guess my system just doesn't like 0.82.

Validating the Steam cache? I believe that was in the link the support manager provided. I did try that, and I also just re-did it in the hopes it would take, but it did not. Sad face. I hope I don't sound argumentative, I really want this to work so I can get back to playing (errr, testing I mean!). The ticket number is #XLS-970-64877. Both the Yor and the Drengin have been rather unfriendly. It just makes it that much
So I'm hooked on GalCiv3, started during Beta 4. When Beta 5 started, I was unable to load saves. Now with 5.2 I get a CTD whenver I click on a ship, a shipyard, or the designer. Also if I click on the idle ship button. These are always new games so I can't even finish turn 1 to check if the loading saves bug was fixed for me! Not to be too dramatic, but I'm going into withdrawal here. I've tried every troubleshooting suggestion from the support section that I can find, yet I
I have also had this problem, and have submitted tickets for it. I saved many different game types to try and see if it was a particular setting, but I have not gotten any luck with that so far. Map sizes, settings, and custom races do not seem to matter. Autosaves do not load either. I tried the game settings refresh they suggested, and tried lowering my graphics to make it easier on my computer to load (which seems to play it just fine at high settings).
