The display? The strategy? Watching things blow each other up with rockets and lasers? The competition? The 3d ships? If you had to choose between magnificent graphics and deep, engaging strategy, which would you prefer? I'm curious what others think. Sins does a great job of meshing the two: I can only name a few other games which can come close to excellent in both respects. Personally, since my subpar computer can barely render Sins under the minimum sett

I like the Vasari due to their multitude of nasty tricks and late-game superiority. Seriously: Phase missiles? Detect any phase jump? Jump to any planet? Build moving, offensive SBs? Instant-healing to units in need of it (instead of repair-over-time)? Strong, repairable strikecraft? Given the current faction balance, I don't see why anyone would want to be anything other than Vasari in the late game, unless of course they're focusing completely on income (eco slot). T

I mean, seriously, you hardly ever want your carriers intermingled in your fleet...and the micro needed for flak and support ships just makes virtually any formation pointless...
Agreed.
I never ever use fleets... I find that alt-clicking to give each individual unit a command usually feels a bit better than forcing ships to move in a formation.

(that's why I said "free fighter squad" instead of "free squad") Then again, I don't really see a problem with allowing strikecraft in gener
Sometimes it's fun late-game seeing how long you can get the AI with its entire 800+ supply fleet to chase a single scout around the gravity well. Usually their fighters rip it to shreds in a few seconds, but you can probably prolong it almost indefinitely in a plasma storm (no SC). "AI leader, our homeworld is being bombed to pieces and the starbase and other structures are getting torn to shreds! Should we do something?" "No, tell every ship to keep chasing that enemy sc
Not that it hasn't been said, but the biggest problem is a lack of effective system defense options that don't involve a "fleet"--even if it is only comprised of scouts.
I can understand from a "realism" standpoint why effective defense in 3 dimensional space would be difficult to impossible without mobile forces (in a fleet), but I also don't really like the forced-fleet-rush and forced-defend-from-rush strategies in
This is only a suspicion but I think it automatically drops turrets when it's being attacked, even if by strikecraft (which the turrets obviously can't hit) - it might also drop them right after warping from a well with an enemy starbase due to the hull damage caused. Or did you see it happening in other cases as well?
As long as the AI gives a proper challenge on the higher difficulties i don't see why it matters how "smart" it is. It will still be fun to those who like co-op and who don't need the pride of winning over other players.
If you aren't limiting yourself, then once you have good fast early expansion down, there isn't really any challenge at all against nearly any AI: a starbase at each choke point will melt nearly an

I have been micromanaging to focus the attacks of all my bombers and Cap ships and drones onto the enemy capital ships to start. If you want to weaken the enemy's attack power as quickly as possible, let your bombers target heavy cruisers or other
One of main problems of Ai is that they do not scrape structures. I find it pain in the a** when I have to fight culture while expanding.
If they've got culture (and culture stations) so far up that that's an issue early-game, you probably wouldn't be doing much more expanding in that direction anyway...
A problem I've noticed on the harder AIs: they rarely, if ever, scrap their structures, even if it's a good idea. For instance, once I was playing with an allied hard AI who maxed out on logistics structures on his front-line planet, but hadn't built any culture centers there - so, later in the game, enemy culture was overthrowing his planet every 10 minutes or so, my ally would recolonize and upgrade, and it would happen again, etc. I'm wondering if this might also po
From what I've heard you can use Ventrilo or Xfire, but it might take a little doing to get all of your teammates connected. That's one option, there might be better ones.
Oh, I was thinking of other factions. Vasari skirmishers make little sense early-game.
Don't touch the light frigates; total waste of money early-game. They're good against Advent T0 spam, carrier cruiser rushes, and massed flak tactics, and that's it. The AI will never pull any of these, so they're only useful for disrupting support cruisers. Instead, use scouts for combat purposes. They're cheaper, faster, and they get a damage bonus against the only two units in the militia you need
Also, what's the ideal fleet setup for colonizing early-game? I usually make a Jarrasul Evacuator + 8 light frigates to clean up quick, but I don't play online and haven't really learned any strategies.
I try to expand as fast as possible in as many directions as possible. If I'm going with a colonizer cap strategy, I usually build a bunch of scouts and then a colony frigate (for whatever direction the capital ship isn't going in), so
1) How do you track where there are battles happening? The AI builds a huge army sends them off in all directions and then i totally lose whats going on where. Is there a quick way to zoom in where there are active battles happening?
Hover the mouse over the bars just to the right of a gravity well (when zoomed out). If you see large numbers of ships from multiple factions, it's very likely that a battle is happening there.
