Thanks for the suggestions folks! Notepad++ it is. Thanks to the power of YouTube, and the goodwill of numerous contributors, I got a good demo of it. Was impressed by its simplicity coupled with a wide range of capabilities. And the idea of open source collaboration just makes me happy. I hadn't known that all those scripting languages would be supported under one roof. Among that list; XML, Python, HTML, Java and Javascript are things I've

Having been inspired by Frogboy's recent modding videos; I've come to the conclusion that I really need an XML Editor. MS Notepad worked for some limited Civ4 and TripleA tweaks, but it is apparent that I really need an editor. I've looked around a little and checked out CNET's offerings; but have no clue as to what criteria I should be looking for. I can't afford to buy one at the mom

I like the idea of forts as well. I think they'd be justified simply for the RP fun factor. Forts and Castles are just plain cool! But they are also significant battlefield assets which could add interesting possibilities to the tactical play. To quote Brad... "Elemental is a strategy game that takes place in an RPG world." I think castles and forts, fit well the bill of strategy and RPG. I'd want to see Caravans expanded to support f

LOL that was fun to watch! Unrestrained fun and laughter is contagious! Thanks Brad! If I'm having this much fun just watching other people play the game, imagine the fun I'll have when I get my turn! I'm also looking forward to the modding. In D&D I enjoyed creating things more than playing. I tried learning Python for Civ4, but my " to learn " queue was/is so full that I never got past the writing of a simple knock knock joke. Its great
And most game "protests" amount to nothing. The Left4Dead 2 group is my favorite one, people saying they wouldn't by that due to broken promises Valve made about the first game. That made some noise, and really amounted to little else. (Or the Modern Warfare 2 boycotters, most of which you found playing MW2 on day 1.)
Fan feedback does make a difference... <
I think you guys highly overestimate the strength of any backlash. It will be minuscule. The whole membership of the three big Civ fan sites is less than 20% of civ4's sales figures. If only 10% of total fansite membership is active (not spam accounts, dead accounts, DL's etc) and looking to buy Civ5 then you're looking at 1% of Civ4's sales figures. The ENTIRE hardcore Civ community represents 1% of total Civ4 sale
No, I know what the problem is. And I'm saying that there won't be a large backlash when it comes out, because that isn't really a problem for a lot of people.
I think there will be a significant backlash from Civ communities. steam with all its updates, is sure to get in the way of people playing thier game. I've read about these problems on the steam forums. They are common and constant.&nb

I'd very much like to see a Civ total conversion mod! And a Mod based on the Dune books. If the mod was based on the Empire rather than on Arrakis itself, it would be interesting to use the Dynasty feature to portray the Bene Gesserit breeding program. Perhaps it would even be possible to mod in a Dynasty Victory Condition for the breeding of a Kwisatz Haderach? A mod focusing on just the planet Arrakis would be interesting as well. I've got a mod idea left o

Is it appropriate to add links to other Elemental videos? For instance Gorstagg's Blog where he has posted a number of gameplay videos? ( +1 Karma! ) I was info starved and had quickly exhausted all the official sources. Was nice to have stumbled upon Gorstaggs stash. I'd come to this thread first as the appropriately descriptive thread title promised a treasure trove of info. Makes sense

Add yet another dedicated Civer to the "won't get Civ5 due to steam" list. Civ provided near all of my gaming needs. I've just a handful of other games, and rarely play them. Civ + M ods provided what I needed. I haven't bought a game since Civ4:BTS and didn't plan on buying any games outside of the Civ series. I was a guaranteed sale, and a loyal, committed fan of the series<
But will we have the assurance that any number of needed shards will be there ? Like if I buy a book of fire with a spell that need 4 shards, but the map has only 3 ... and even if there's 4 on the map, the time you get them, then you already won. Why would I buy books of magic if I'm not even sure to be "able" to cast them once in the game ?
Although I do like the fun of " making the best out of what y
EVERYTHING in Elemental is overpowered. You start out with a shard in your area but maybe no food. Or maybe you have food but no metal in your area. Or maybe you have metal but no horses. Or maybe you have a shard and horses but you have no crystal. Or maybe you have a shard and crystal but no good NPCs. EVERY game of Elemental should be a roller coaster ride of imbalance. But Fun.
[quote who
