Dear steam I would like to thank you for sending your sales people to spam this forum of your competitor with badgering, insults and annoying strawman arguments. You may be wondering why I'm thanking you. Let me explain. Thanks to the annoying behavior of the likes of Firbolg, <a id="ctl00__Content__RepeaterRepl
No worries, I wasn't trying to have a go at you. If I sounded harsh then I apologize. I loved Civ 4 and the points that you see as weaknesses I see as strengths, you are right in that we can have different opinions so fair enough. For myself, I hated the idea of Steam Civ 5. As the release date gets closer my resolve is weakening. I want Civ 5 but don't want to be forced into using Steam, what a problem! Ultimately
I wonder how much of gaming sales are from repeat customers who liked previous versions of the game or other games by the maker, and how much is from new customers, buying the game because of ads and hype, or a cold search for games of a certain genera at amazon or similar or from the info on the box at a store, or a recommendation from a friend? My impression is that games are one-off deals. Many customers probably buy the game without knowing the company's past games and history on a whim,
MichaelCook June 15, 2010 1:55:20 AM I don't see any reason to get into a pissing match with you over my personal dislikes about Civ4, kid. Part of growing up is the realization others can and do have different preferences and opinions and learning how to live with that. You'll have to find someone e

It was dumbed down in Civ 4 so as to not "offend" anybody, and you can remove it entirely with a minimal impact on how the game actually works. Really it w

They do want monopoly control and I would not be surprised if they are connected to microsoft in some sort of shady, back alley way. Even if there is nothing in the official paper trail of either that connects the two. While I wa
Interesting, I was looking at the other games at the Matrix site and there are several that are billed as successors to some of the old SSI lines of games. One even is apparently by Grigsby. I wonder if Matrix is a successor to SSI?
. Good thing you were already boycotting Steam before I got here, or else I might have changed someone's mind on the internet! Would've been a world first.
You might have changed my mind. Then again, maybe you're one of the ones who did. :D I had never heard of steam before this week. I had been checking out the progress of civ5 at civfanatics every once in a while, when I noticed a discussion about st

In every case, it only influenced those potential customers to become hostile to the company the sales pitch was for. I've boycotted many
And while you guys are boohooing over Steam, Steam has now released a Mac version, with, a Linux version close behind. Civ IV, and undoubtedly Civ V, will support Steamplay, meaning if you buy one copy, you can get it on both Windows and Mac. Valve is also granting anyone who bought any Source game on Windows the Mac equivalent for free. Watch out, the evil Steam empire is coming for you by expanding into your market when
well said
Thanks. I thought about posting it at civfanatics, but I already picked up 2 warnings over there for a post ranting about steam and the steam sales spam. [e digicons]:D[/e] I figured I'd better quit before they barred me from the site (I still find it useful for the "other games" and the older civs mod sections). But that now makes 2 reasons why I'll be passing on civ5. 1) because of the st
If it's true as I read here that only 20% of customers download games while the rest still buy the disk, that means only a small fraction of t2/firaxis customers will be downloading civ5 in the first place. Giving steam a monopoly, if that is in fact what is going to happen by default because of steam's business practices, means the civ people will even be missing out on some of those download sales because of customers preferring other download services or not liking steam. If steam has 70%
