OS X has NEVER included a DVD making program. I assume you're referring to iDVD and this has always been a separate app, no more a part of OS X than AppleWorks. I do have to say I was not surprised to see that iMovie and iPhoto were not shipped with Tiger as they were with Panther. The versions included with the OS have usually been outdated releases the last couple of years anyway. As well, neither app started out being bundled with the OS so I guess

I really don't think there is any true comparison between the Stardock apps mentioned above and Winstep products. They are each created from an entirely different point of view and the way they achieve their intended results is entirely different. Certainly the Stardock apps get an A+ for their flexible skinning ability but I've always thought the Winstep apps were focused mainly on usability. You know, I don't even see this discussed among mac users or the normal sites anymore... the interest seems past it's expiration date. In fact after the first 2 or 3 days, it was a big yawn fest to all but those emotionally or technically involved with Konfabulator. This is the only site I visit that is still covering it ad nauseam, weeks later, and it's not even a Mac oriented site.

Hate to break it to you "Big Doug" but OS/2 and Stardock's work for it have absolutely no relation to Aqua AT ALL. Actually, the Konfabulator author is rather displeased but he himself has admitted that his product was inspired by Apple's Desk Accessories so he comes off as a bit of a whiner when he tries to pull the innovation card when Apple decides to re-implement them. Okay, let's set the record straight here... The Dashboard is nothing more than an updated version of Apple's own Desk Accessories that have been popular since way back in the early 1980's (In fact they were first invented by Andy Hertzfield in 1981). Desk accessories were small widgets/mini-apps. Back in System 1.0 when the original Macs could only really run one app at a time, you had a special method of accessing these mini-apps so if you needed a calculator, notepad, time clock/alarm, etc..

I really don't get the controversy about this... these "widgets" are nothing new... their heritage goes all the way back to the "Desk Accessories" included in early, early versions of Mac OS. The only difference now is that they're on their own Expose layer and covered in gooey goodness. If they looked like normal Apple apps rather than appearing as jazzed up applets like they do now, I doubt anyone would be making the comparison. I've been using OS X since the week of release back in 2001 and absolutely love the dock, right out in the open - magnification and all. Judging by the shareware this author recommends I'm thinking he's an OS9 die-hard. I have tried DragThing off and on over the years but not enough to keep it. I can make the dock do whatever I need.

Chas... there is no evidence I've ever read where fragmentation itself leads to corruption or instability. I've never experienced it, either, and I have virtually never run a defragger - I maybe ran it once or twice a year under under OS/2, Windows NT, and Windows 2000. I have never run any defragging utility on any of my Macs in the last 2 1/2 years.
