I had a similar problem today. Typed my serial number from the CD over and over in the Metaverse Characters thing. Then I went to Impulse and registered my game there. Everything worked after that.

At the risk of being yet another "me too" post, it's not a flash player problem either. I'm running flash 9 and also don't see the smiley button.
Thanks for the Flash Player info, Andrew. I uninstalled my Flash Player 10 and installed 9.115 and it let me upload an avatar. It took a while to find the older version though. In case anyone else is going through what I did, you can find it by googling old apps and going to the oldapps website. (Just to save some time and frustration).
