You realize that this idea has been around in science fiction stories for decades, especially in reference to renewable food souces on starships (Note: clever GalCiv tie-in) drrider

OK, of all you self-proclaimed geezers on this forum, which of you played the ORIGINAL, the REAL Galactic Civilizations...running on OS2? And, Yes, I did. And yes, I still have it (though I don't have OS2 running on anything). As a side question, Brad, are you still running OS2 (the Blessed) on any of your systems? drrider
Right now my wife and I are due to have a baby on the 27th. She generally sleeps more than me anyway, and, with the baby, she's sleeping around ten hours. Since I'm a five or six hour a night guy, that gets me some decent game time. She also has a thing for antique focused TV shows (Antique Roadshow, Cash in the Attic, etc.), so that gets me some more time that I don't feel guilty about. I think she's happy that books and this game are my two main draws; She doesn't ha
Hey it is a very nice strategy, I decided to go through another game the same way pretty much, just do things more efficiently. I noticed when I started the game I didn't set my abilities the way I thought I had, and actually had a +50 percent to military instead of research or economy. Anyways I was able to secure research treaties and also I'm pretty much close to the end of the tech tree. Only 5 players left including me (even wiped out one on my own) and I'm at war
BTW librarything.com advises the following books among others (http://www.librarything.com/suggester/7702) to readers who have read Old man's war: "The Ghost brigades" also by Scalzi "Spin" by Charles Wilson "Field of dishonor" by David Weber Despite the expertise of librarything.com, DO NOT pick up "Field of dishonor" to read without starting earlier in the Honor Harrington series. You will be lost in the political intrigue, without g
Well, actually, as the senior systems operations watch officer at my "enterprise", as long as our several networks are running smoothly, (ahem) YOU GUYS are paying for my forum browsing. Keep it clean though, or I will have to block you...er...us. drrider
Each Ethic has its own suited victory too. Good suits Diplomatic Victories, Neutral for Tech Victories, Evil for Conquest Victories and all of them suit Influence Victories. this is the 1st time I have seen this stated so succinctly. Neutral is also the best path if you are going to try the "all research all the time" path to any of the victory types (but build plenty of finance planets). drrider
Just a warning for those who want to see Pirates more often: Be careful what you wish for. If Pirates ever really get rolling without quick suppression, its kind of like having loose Dread Lords roaming around, except they don't invade planets AFAIK. (BTW, I really like both events.)
I'm not quite sure what you are asking, so I'm going to try to cover all bets. Please forgive if it ends up sounding a bit pedantic; no condescencion (sp?) intended. In DL, planets of base PQ>11 get 2 additional tiles per level of planetforming. Lesser PQ planets get 1 tile per level. In DA, planets of base PQ>5 get 1 additional tile per level of planetforming; PQ5 get 1 or 2 per level, PQ4 get 3 or 4 per level (except Mars), PQ3 get 2, 3, or 5 tiles per level, I've never see
(Citizen)Andrew CoryMay 15, 2007 23:34:24Reply #5 Psst... did anybody tell Brad that he already has our money? He's got our money for this game. He wants it for the next game also. At this rate, he's gonna get it, too... I think that Braddock missed the part where Frogboy said back ported part of the new graphics engine from the upcoming fantasy strategy game that is in development. Mind you, only a piece of
(Citizen)TLHeartMay 15, 2007 13:52:54 It is a trivial matter to me...anyone who only plays less than 10 turns at a time, is basically cheating, unleveling the playing feild against the ai. (Avatar)FrogboyMay 15, 2007 22:17:57 Last time I checked, the AI doesn't get to reload a saved game when they make a mistake. I mean come on, let's be real
for example the limitation of the colony module to 250 colonists. However, it has been answered elsewhere that the 250 co-mod was an actual design choice by Brad for 1.6, not a bug or an unintended consequence. drrider
(Citizen)Dog of JusticeMay 15, 2007 04:00:24Reply #33 Brad, I think almost nobody really cares about the AI turn 0, but more folks care about the AI getting a production turn every time you reload in the middle of the game, since this disproportionately affects people who can only play a few turns at a time. You addressed the former issue but not the latter, was this an unintentional oversight? I suspect the majority of players, if informed, would actually prefer t
Frogboy, You're kidding, right? "My uncle has been embezzling from the family firm for years but we just found out about it. We just caught it because we have a new bookkeeper. I guess since he's been doing it for years, we can just let it go on until he retires in a couple more years." Its only kind of piddly if you habitually play on large/huge/gigantic maps, with abundant stuff, and you have no need to save and reload much. I often, however, play with a
Y'know what is scary about top level players? Seeing Wyndstar's scores, reading his strategy analyses and AAR's and wheels within wheels...then think about facing this guy IN COURT! Ooofh! drrider
As for covers, if you look at the covers of the SF classics they ALL had cheesy covers that generally involved slavering aliens, scantily clad buxom women, vaguely shaped futuristic space ships, beefy men with laser rifles, or all of the above. Scali’s book covers remind me strongly of covers on Heinlein, van Vogt, Norton, and Delany I have in my cache! So, his covers are kind of retro (and undoubtedly cheaper than custom art). If that isn’t enough I can dig up a clich
In DA, the Custom Race gets no "starting" abilities, but recieves 15 ability points, and you can choose your Super Ability, which are fixed for in-game races. Still isn't enough to balance it with the hunkier preset races (customized Yor ROCK!), but it gives considerably more design flexibility. drrider
The basic form of the game is a sandbox, 4X starting from just your homeworld. that's what most people spend most of their time on. The 2 story campaigns are just color, background, and a certain amount of "solve this situation - using the usual rules of the larger game" puzzle effect. There are substantial differences from DL to DA in detailed development play. There are also some important changes in how combat is resolved, but you might not realize those until you ar playing with
OK, I did some testing over the weekend. 1. Asteroid distribution in home systems appears to be NOT changed in the latest beta (1.6b3, aka 1.59[b].095). Still 3 appearing in each race's home system, despite what .xml file says. Cornhusker either got a VERY low probability setup, or a glitch, or an asteroid field that edged in from way left field off another system. 2. Interesting results when starting a race with PQ+ ability. a) PQ+ calculations apparently round DOWN a
BTW, registering to get access to SDC is really worth it for DA. The latest beta includes some clever recoding (I believe Carielf also did the head slap thing - grin) that greatly improves performance of the entire game. drrider
The actual relevent article was: N-Dimensional Structures In Superspace by mathematician Patricia Vasquez as I seem to recall grinder! Get a girlfriend. (grin)
If you are running into the absolute PQ ("open land") based growth limit, but you can FEED more, you can fly in additional population, up to the food supply limit, and it won't die off. drrider
Transfer PATH!? Were you asleep in "N Dimensional Physics 301"?? (grin) Nope, apparently YOU were. Resources are *beamed*, not warped, or any pocket dimension or time distortion related bull Then there's the issue with resources actually decreasing with distance, but we're really not getting into a physics discussion here, are we? Actually, in 2nd year there was this demo by one of the graduate groups where they "beamed" 10 lbs of
DA 1.6 beta 1, playing as Iconians with 20% minor planet result (3+2+2+2), I have FOUR asteroid fields in my home system. I just double-checked it because I didn't believe it myself. Yeah, I wondered if that would get fixed (though I haven't noted it myself yet). someone else earlier in the thread mentioned that the planets .xml file actually makes provision for different asteroids in each home system, but it did not seem to be working right. Apparent
