the first recorded man-only object to break the speed of sound was a USAF sergeant who free fell from 103,000 ft while maintaining a head down tuck. passing 45,000 ft he was clocked above the sound barrier for 14 seconds ( 1.07 mach). ruptured eardrums, shook him up badly, bent his harness hooks at opening shock as he had not slowed to terminal velocity. can't remember the year.

part of the problem, wombat, is that with the special stuff the aussies are doing, no one ever hears a peep about it on the news so long as it's going perfectly. i take no news on their activities as a clear sign they've been tremendously successful.

if you had on-scene reporting sending film of the latest slaughters to the world media every evening, it would get more attention. but when reporters go to observe that kind of situation, they are often killed or imprisoned. look also at how many million equatorial africans are going to die from HIV during the next ten years, and the inadequate measures being used to try to stem the epidemic. you're right, paxx, it's ghastly.

the UN, as it stands, was set up to deal with things in a different age. it's biggest achilles heel has always been anything that demanded immediate humanitarian intervention. i don't want to do away with the UN, but i think it's time that we got together and gave it a much needed overhaul .

america has often refused to give upfront assurance that it won't do certain things, even when they know full well that they won't. i think it falls under blunting your enemy's aggressiveness by giving him additional tactical issues to worry about. and those assurances seem to set a precedent that you may come to regret in future conflicts whose particulars aren't known or foreseen yet.

"how would you feel if..." always precedes a hypothetical question. "Let's hope that .." always precedes a statement of desire. i wouldn't put words into his mouth, and i also don't believe in taking words out of his mouth and substituting something acceptable in their place.
