After a brief recess from playing GalCiv, I'm back again. I was playing that other Sins game. I love ToA but making adjustments to my strategies is proving more difficult than I first imagined. I have been playing DA since it came out and I got pretty good at it. My favorite race to play was the Iconians. I figured I would start with them again in ToA. I am finding very quickly that all my old playstyles will not work. For example, I get two major precu

PC Gamer did a nice section called "History Repeats Itself" (Apr 2008, p. 8) where someone wrote in about how "bad" Crysis is and that Half-Life 2 is so much better. They mentioned the game had a bland storyline, lack of originality, etc, etc... Of course, the next part of the article flashes back to 2005 and displays another letter written by another reader about how "bad" Half-Life 2 is. That reader wrote pretty much the same thing. Moral of the story: No matter how good y
Hey everyone post you fav 4X games of all time! Mine are Sins of a Solar Empire(naturally) Masters of Orion 2 and 3 and Galciv 1.
With all due respect to ozu08865 I am surprised MOO3 showed up as one of your favorites. (I bought it also and cried when I found out how bad it was.) It was the only game that I purchased where it was more productive to use the CD as a coffee coaster than running the software. I never played MOO2 but I did hear about how fun it was, that is

It seems to only damage the planet. I had my ships right next to the planet I was attacking and I lost nothing. I was just finishing up a game and I managed to get two of those things built. After the second one fired, I got the victory screen. Pretty powerful (and expensive) stuff.
Thats why I wish the game had a clock." I'll play for 10 more minutes." *2 hours passes* "Five minutes to go, then I'm done!"
Hehe, I am all too aware of that problem. I keep my watch next to me and set the alarm. I find myself resetting that alarm every half hour or so.

The "ping" button is supposed to give the AI an idea of what you want it to do. It has a single player function as well as a multiplayer function. But to be honest, I have never used it...yet. It is the one below the auto place button.

I have been playing the TEC a lot. If I recall it is a level 5 or 6 tech. It is way up there. Once you research it, the wormholes will open up to you.

Actually, I was thinking about posting a "This game sucks" thread, but it was going to turn out to be a complement. The title would have been This game sucks... (notice the periods) It would have continued inside the post as ...me away from my real life. Or something like that. It would have been a great attention grabber, but I don't think I would have attracted the kind of people I wanted posting on a thread I created. So, in the end, I decided against it. I believe the humor would have

Ok, I have read a lot of reviews about SoaSE. I was rather impressed that the game got a 3 page spread in PC Gamer (PCG) and a 2 page review in Games for Windows (GFW) (4 pages if you look at the beginning of the review section.) Of course, I have also read the reviews in Gamespot and other sites as well. Most of the reviews are say pretty much the same thing. Great gameplay. Unique design. Needs a campaign element. Diplomacy model could use a little tweaking. I am sure Stardock an
...End of April. I still remember getting the email, claiming it would be released NOVEMBER, LAST YEAR. D:
Hmmm, I also remember people casting their votes to wait and send out a better finished product. Thanks for taking the time for putting out a great product. It was a long wait, but you can never anticipate getting sick or getting overwhelmed with other projects. Patience is a virtue and I am sure that most of us (the other players) will greatly anticipate

Some of the fun parts about the strategy of the game is trying to get some of the achievements. For example, I was going for the no military research and all civic research badge. This was going to cause a lot of problems. Why? Well there would be no flak frigates, no seige frigates, and of course, no LRM's. How do I solve my problems? Easy, I had to build all Capital ships. My next problem was the pace they were built. I was taking damage because the AI could ping me at anytime with fri

I learned by messing around in the tutorial. As long as you don't have an "OK" box at the bottom of your screen you can are free to test a lot of the other functions of the game. It is helpful because you have NO enemy to worry about. Feel free to build up planets and see what things do. On the other hand, a mini campaign may be a nice addition. If you start out with a limited tech tree and basic abilities and move towards a full tech tree with everything, it might help lessen the l
You guys want delays, try waiting like we did for the Orange Box and Team Fortress 2.
I got a better one Zellio, if you want to know about delayed games, have you ever heard of Duke Nukem Forever. Now that's DELAYED!

I have been playing for a while so I feel that I can help a little: 1. You are going to have to find a balance between expanding and developing. All your new planets start out in the red. You usually have to get somewhere around 1.0M population before things start evening out. Also, bump up that tax slider. At least for a little while, it will keep you from eating up your beginning funds. I keep mine around 49% for a little while. Of course, the more unhappy people you have, the

Galciv or SoaSE??? I say BOTH!!! I have made my decision. I just picked up Sins today. In fact, just after I finish writing this post, I will unwrap the box and pop in my brand new DVD. I look forward to a grand 4X adventure that will keep me up into the wee hours of the night. Congratulations Stardock, you just got another $40 out of my wallet!

I would guess that you are so advanced that the techs they stole from someone else, you already have. It is nice when they steal weapons techs from the Drengin that I have not bothered to research yet. Especially when the Drengin are being particularly nasty and won't trade with me. I have not traded with them enough to know if there is some sort of algorithm that causes them to desire planets more than other techs. I usually get away with trading techs for techs or money for techs.

A very good article indeed. I guess it helps to vent frustrations every once in a while. I may not be a developer, but I know the value of a hard days work. If someone came up to me the next day and said everything I just did was "stupid." I would be a little angry. Programs may be buggy at first and not work on every system but I can imagine that it is hard to make something that works on different machines with different hardware configurations. If you have an Xbox or Playstation, they a

Hmmm, this thread got quiet. I usually see one or two posts everyday. I guess people are really busy checking out the new TA build. Or, maybe some people are out there kicking some Drengin butt. (Or if you like the Drengin, kick someone else's butt.) Anyway, I'm working on a new huge map. I just love epic length games. Long live the Empire!

Hmmm, decisions...decisions. I just downloaded the newest beta for TA. Now I have do decide, do I continue to play DA for the benefit of the Empire or do I switch to TA and try out all the cool new options? The stuff posted in the Journal section sounds like there were some major changes over the last two weeks. I can't wait to see the final product.

Hey fellow cat people! I made a post in another forum just a few minutes ago. I noticed I have a shiny new gold medal to go along with my post. It's cool to be in first place. I have a huge game going on right now that is about mid game. I hope to help make our first place lead even more solid!

I love widescreen. I'll never go back. Of course the bigger the better. At least until I go blind from sitting too close. One thing that I have noticed is that some games are not formatted so well for widescreen. As an example, has anyone noticed that some of the images in DL, DA, and TA seem to be stretched along the horizontal axis? Of course this is pretty typical when you take a 4:3 image and put it on a 16:9 screen. While the starmap looks great along with most of the other s
