When I rate something it shows how many people have rated the work before me and usually there are one or two, maybe three ratings - not a big sample of opinions.

I remember in the 80s reading usenet news (you could skim through all groups while having your morning coffee in those days). Every july posts would appear from concerned "old internet users" about the new college students arriving and starting to crowd the newsgroups, ruining the community.
