I tend to concentrate my efforts on just one or two new environments, especially if there are quite a few worlds of that type in range. This gives the AI a disincentive to research that colonisation tech, since they'll find that by the time I'm done grabbing there's none of that type available. By researching a different tech they'll be able to settle near their homeworld, not mine. I've found that on any given map, there will not always be an even split of habitability types.

I won a technological victory with well over 10000 points after beating two out of four major races so badly they surrendered to me long before I could invade every one of their remaining worlds. Most of the end game was spent buying more discovery spheres and improving overall population. I actually had enough tax and tourism income that by the end I could have launched an all-out conquest of the other two races (they'd got wise and made an alliance) but the tech victory seemed an easier way

Question then- is there any way outside of SDC to get the previous patches? I lost my archives due to reformatting, but I'd rather play the older version of DA without the bug. This bug could have existed at some point during the beta, but it wouldn't have been picked up because the cost of defence was much greater. I think it's key to build ships that attack your opponent's strongest defence rather than a zero or weak defence, to avoid the off

Hey on another note what is the deal with the supposed *free* demo? My cousin wanted to try this out; but when he went to the download page it took him to file planet and they want almost $7 a month to allow the download if you just sign up for a single month or $4 a month if you pay for a full year. I think a lot of people will refuse to try out the game demo on principle; because *ALL* demo downloads are suppose to be *free*. Or at least I though so. <br

Bear in mind that (in Dark Avatar at least) there's a United Planets resolution which, if passed, dramatically increases trade revenue. Then there's random events which depress tax revenue but improve trade (or tourism).

Each engine adds on top of the ship's base speed, and on top of any bonus - for example, the bonus you get for researching Impulse Drive, Warp Drive, Hyperwarp Drive, and for patenting Gravity Accelerators. More engines is good, if you can afford it. Especially in the early game, engines make the difference between between beating your opponents in the colonty rush or not.

I think addiction to something is a convenient method for some people to abdicate self-control. You may feel compelled to play, but if you really want to spend time doing something else then all that's needed is a little willpower. If you find yourself unable to will yourself away from the screen, then that is something you need to work on. Games are not necessarily for everyone, and even gamers disagree on what is actually fun. I sat and watched my brother play Final F

Interesting. And how did the AI deal with it? Were they smart enough to build ships with engines or did they end up with tons of them in orbit? I gave cargo hulls a base speed of zero, and they did put an engine in their colony ships. However whether this is simply because it made sense for the ship to be as fast as possible given available components, or that the AI recognised that a ship with a speed of zero would be pretty useless, I can't say for su

These hit points aren't added to the racial hitpoints ability but instead to the ship which encountered the anomaly. If you later upgrade that ship to a warship, the extra hitpoints will be useful.

Actually, they're only defenceless in the sense that they can't add any firepower to the battle. Because of the usual targeting formula, if a sensor boat does accompany a fleet then it would be attacked last. Interestingly, this means they can gain experience without actually doing any fighting.... While it's not ideal to lose two logistics points to gain great sensor coverage, it's better than having an enemy fleet slip by unnoticed.

The concept of doing more with less is not a new one. Computers have shrunk from room-sized to palm-sized and become more efficient and useful along the way. Despite the problem of radioactive wastes, nuclear reactors can generate more electricity per tonne of fuel than one fired by coal. The problem with advancing space travel is that at present there's no resources that can be exploited economically, nor do we know of any worlds outside our own solar system which can be inhabited with minim

The off-type defence bug apparently manifests when ships have piles of defences that are not of the same type as the weapon being used against them. When the on-type defence is being worn down by that weapon, the full value of the off-type defences must also be worn down (instead of the sqaure root of the off-type defences) before the ship is utterly defenceless against that weapon type. Of course, it is always possible for the ship to suffer hitpoint damage as a result of bleed-through (where

I think the key thing is to shut down non-essential processes before starting the game. Especially if you have just 1 GB of memory, you're going to see an improvement on larger maps if all the bloatware is first unloaded.

If a dev says that defence degradation is going to be fixed I'm not going to doubt it because they only have a few minutes to illustrate it. However it can't hurt to send an e-mail to Stardock and ask specifically about it.

Not a bug. The game uses up one of your transports, then takes only as many more as are needed to account for your losses. For example, if you attack a planet with ten thousand legions, and four thousand of them die, then if all the transports pack two thousand legions each you only lose two out of five.

Try reading this topic first. The bottom line is, a multiplayer game is very different from one you play against the computer.

Laser cannons, well that makes more sense Shouldn't this topic be categorised under Dark Avatar? It disappears quite quickly in the general Galciv II category.

95 Replies 58,687 Views

Lasers only roll 0 or 1 each for damage, except of course when empire attack bonuses are applied. If we say that ten of them roll seven in total, that's going to be seven 1s and three 0s. The defence gets to roll against each attack, but of course each attack reduces the maximum possible defence roll. A far more thorough example of combat in DA is here . However, it doesn't factor in the new changes.

95 Replies 58,687 Views

Any damage points scored over and above defence are applied to the hit points. The example doesn't show us any individual rolls (for attack or defence) and therefore all we can actually say is that there is some kind of fix.

95 Replies 58,687 Views

As to the question at hand, It seems now that the best defense will be the cheapest defense as the degradation is the same no matter what you are being hit with. Does this even constitute a fix. On-type defence is still better than off-type because it'll suck up enough damage to prevent a lot of it from bleeding through to the hull. When the on-type defence fails, off-type defences will block some damage AND will probably allow more damage to bleed thro
