It's 4:00 PM here (1600 for my military bretheren). Sergeant mom has been up since 3:00 AM to line up outside the stores. On Black Friday no less. It's 14 degrees outside! What could possibly be worth all that self infflicted aggravation? I'm beginning to suspect we refinanced the house not for a lower interest rate, but to finance Christmas! I think I'll be afraid, v

Ted, As a personal aside, I appologize if that came off sounding like an attack. I respect your opinions. I do want this article/piece/posting/blog to be an exchange of ideas and opinions. Sometimes it seems a little too one sided around here. That gets stagnant. So please excuse me if I play devil's advocate from time to time.

Expect a strategic base to be eventually set up, probably in Northern Iraq I think that's a given, considering the situation with Iran and to a lesser extent with Turkey and Syria. I think "outpost" may be a more accurate description however! <img src="http://images.stardock.com/JU/smiles/Gasp.gif" bor

Iraq is not Iran. But another Saddam? Possible Agreed, however I do believe that it was Saddam that kept a Theocracy from happening, just as the Shah did until his overthrow. We currently fill the vacuum created by Saddams removal. When we are gone the strongest group will be Islamic fundamental

but I think the democracy will hang on, at least for a dozen years or so One could argue that South Vietnam did as well...as long as we were there. The Iraqi Army's new incarnation seems to be awfully similar. Corrupt and willing to change sides to whomever has the power at the time. Isn't it a bit arrogant of us to assume we can impart and insti

Before some tinpot declares martial law, and viola. But I think it will take more time than 'fairly rapid'. I have a suspicion it'll be a move towards a Theocracy like Iran. I suppose it depends on your definition of "rapid", but all the players are in place to convince the government at the point of th

That is why the Iraq War has NOT made America safer from another 9/11. It does sort of make one wonder if the occupation is just diverting terrorist attacks here and abroad. I shudder to think of all the "veteran" terrorists being created there. Did we bust up all the smaller terroist training camps, ju

As far as what happens when we do? I dont see much of a change. I'd have to agree. History doesn't speak well of the politics of that area of the world. From kingdoms, to Sheikdoms, colonial rule to dictatorships. Not a real good track record. With a society that has no memory of self rule, a democracy

I'm in the process of rethinking my position on the whole Iraq situation. Please take note, I have not stated what that is, so do not attack me out of hand. I'm trying to divorce myself from emotional reactions on this issue, learn as much as possible, and understand the various points of view. That being said: I'm curious as to what other J/U bloggers think about this sensitive topic. 1. Withdraw within 6 months or later? Why?

Hope it stays through till tomorrow. Alas, no. Just a lonely little pile I mounded up while shovelling the driveway. Just enough to remind me that I still don't know why I'm living here!

I never cease to marvel at first snowfall that "sticks". I got up and let the dogs out and was greeted with a hushed white landscape, giant fluffy white flakes falling. Makes me kind of glad I missed the weather news, it would have ruined the surprise. Well, back to reality, time to shovel and brush off the car before work. <!-- Ju

Personally I wasn't too impressed. I signed up as a "free trial" with a pizza chain I frequent. I signed up, and placed my first que on a late Thursday afternoon. I received the confirmation and ship notice emails almost immeadiately. However the movies did not show up until Monday afternoon. I expect that to get worse over the holiday season. I live in a fairly large midwestern city, so I was a bit disappointed in the turn around time. I have used Net

Whilst doing an inventory of Christmas decorations and bric a brac, what to my wondering eyes should appear? It couldn't be! But yes it was! I smiled so hard my face hurt. Immeadiately I was taken back to another time when the hardest thing in life was trying to sleep on Christmas Eve, ( well ok, waiting for the final school bell to ring ranks up there too). Some way,

So here we are on the brink of what is normally a four day weekend for a lot of folks. Around here with a blended family consisting of adult children, under 18s, step parents, in-laws, 2 dogs and a partridge in a pear tree, it's chaos. Are we entertaining? Who are we visiting? Who's coming? What time? No, 2:00 isn't good, how about 4:00? By the time it's all over, inc
