LW, I know there were gangs before the hurricane, what I was asking is ar the gangs terrorising New orleans now the same ones or have these particular gangs sprung up in response to the situation? All of this being fairly irrlevent because this is the justification that The Australian needed to provide in the first place!

I didn't say I'd read up on Katrina, I said I'd read up on subculture theory and racial history. LW, you still haven't shown me how you know this, and more importantly The Australian never did. If they want to make this sort of comment, they need to justify it. If these are the same gangs that were always around, then why is what they are doing news? Haven't they always been terrrorising the city?

I would have thought the use of etc. actually served a very important purpose. Firstly, to include the bisexual label, but also to allow anyone who might not use the 3 most commonly used labels, but might see things from a more postmodernist perspective for instance. If gender is a social construct, then "heterosexual", "homosexual" and "bisexual" loses its meaning. Yet these people might still be attracted to people described by modernists as "male" o

Thanks Maso. Hee hee it's funny to have compliments on my drawing ability for the first time in my life. There is a link to my LJ blog in the sidebar uner Funny People I do Know: Champas' Political Cartoons, so you can see the toons at any time.

BS, I'm a postmodernist, do you seriously think I haven't read up on those topics and the theories you speak of? When exactly did I label LW racist on this thread? What I want to know is are the gangs referred to in this article gangs that were formed before the event or in reaction to it? That to me has considerable bearing on the issue. Certainly race is important to how many gangs have formed, for all the reasons you suggest, but were they important

I've posted a few of my political cartoons here, but they seem to take longer to load at JU, so I only put some of my political cartoons on this site. But I think my cartoons are so much more interesting and fun than the drivel I put up here. Anyway, my cartoons can be seen at Link <!-- Ju-Anchor-Footer-

Fairly simplistic comments from both her and you Dr Guy. Given that there is a fairly well-evidenced (though not indisputable) theory about the effects of industrialised lifestyles on the weather and ecosystems of the planet, there may be a connection. I'm no scientist, but can you explain to me categorically why, if global warming theory is correct, that global warming has nothing to do with this hurricane? For i8nstance, if I simply make th

LW, can you show me any exaples of these gangs doing what you say they do, or are you just talking through your seat? Dr Guy, I realised what you were doing, and I was saying to you that my points about this were interrelated. They report the race of these gangs when it is irrelevant. They could just as easily report the religion of these gangs, or they could report their average height (I mean seriously: are they tall? Why isn't that consider

LW, when an Australian reporter is reporting in an Australian newspaper, I think I have a right to talk about what is relevant reporting. Dr Guy, are these gangs using their race as justification for their violence and "looting"? LW, I don't believe you can accurately use the Koran to justify the killing of innocent people, but that doesn't stop people doing it. Looting may not be living according to Christian values, but nor is muc

Fair points BS about the racial homogeneity. I'd have to have a think about that one before I could come up with some loony Leftist way of making excuses for them ;> And I suppose the point about different reporters is valid too, and would require further research. Interestingly, I just noticed that this topic I've raised has caused such a conbtroversy that yahoo have removed the picture with a press release. But I don't agree that st

Well yes LW, it is because it is irrelevant. Why would the reporter report aspects of the story that are irrelevant? It's not like the history of oppression has any relevance here (if it ever does). Everyone is on an equal footing when they all lose stuff (although poor people might be more practised at stealing and thus do it more readily). Thanks Para for your comment.

If you think the media isn't racist, this website Link shows a perfect example of why it is absolutely essential that critical literacy is taught in schools. How many of us would have even noticed this difference without it being pointed out? I also wrote in disgust to The Australian newspaper f

Actually Furry, I wholeheartedly agree with your understatement views, but this is a constant balance for the comedian. I find the funniest people I know to be those who use understatement (although John Cleese is a good example of overstatement working just as well). But I found as an actor I had to make my jokes more explicit than what would work best with me because I was trying to reach a wider audience. It's tricky. You can beat people over the he

Here here. I think that if we are talking the full Muslim dress, it may be more practical for that person to attend an Islamic school, but if we're just talking the hijab (headdress), then what's the big deal? So she wears a hat....oooh no! More cartoons to come on this topic: in fact one relates to your idea dynamaso. Thanks Furry for your help in coming up with the idea for the Captn Cook cartoon. What did you think?

Firstly, I'm excited that you recognised it was Warney! Above his head: if you are referring to the smaller item leaving trails behind it, it's an open can of baked beans. But higher on the page than that is Justin Langer having a sleep. The bit you don't want to know is what I've hinted at is happening down the bottom of the page, where Warney is.

Minister tells Muslims: accept Aussie values or 'clear off' Federal Education Minister Dr Brendan Nelson says he will be meeting the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) to develop ways to teach so-called Australian values to Muslim school children. But Dr Nelson says those who do not accept and teach Australian values should "clea

Many have pointed to the laziness of the Australian team, yet everyone seems too scared to come out and blame the captain. Ponting's last 3 predecessors constantly pushed their men to work harder, be more determined and hone their skills. Their drive rubbed off on their men. Yet Ponting sits back and lets his men play as hard as they want. Steve Waugh was not unpopula
