GalCiv 1

You know, I just tried to play GalCiv 1 demo and it's a hard game! I followed the basic walkthrough and at the end of it I was like "no! don’t leave me now... help!" The walkthrough basically gives you the first several moves and rest is left up to you to figure out. I would imagine that all of you veterans are laughing at me about right now, but its like this... the game is information intensive and doesn’t lend itself very well to new players just trying to figure things out.
I know that GalCiv2 is going to have lots of walkthroughs and video help and I for one am very pleased and thankful. GalCiv 1 should have had the same thing IMO. This game has such depth that you feel as though you will never understand the entire strategy and all that that implies. The new player feels overwhelmed by the depth of it all, and GalCiv2 is gonna be even deeper and bigger. AHHHHHHH !! lol
I hope that all you beta veterans and GalCiv 1 players stick around these forums to help us newbie’s with the deep nuances of the game. I have tried to read the manual for GalCiv 2 and to be honest, I am not sure what I am reading most of the time. I mean it appears to be well made but since I have never played it, its a little confusing. When I get the game I am one of those types that like to jump right in but I have a feeling that I am gonna have to set the game aside and read a whole bunch before I even attempt to play lol.

I guess this is a testament of the hard work and effort by the developers that they made such an interesting deeply involving game!
I am really looking forward to losing myself to the game for the foreseeable future

compared to the grossly unneccesary depth of moo3 galciv1 is like a paddling pool. It took me about a day 2 get the full swing of gc1, but even after months you still pick up on new things, which is good in my opinion

You make some valid points. About jumping right in.. I'm planning on bee-lining right to the tutorial.

GalCiv is like the Smash Brothers of 4X games. That is, there isn't all that unneeded complexity that other 4X games tend to have, but the gameplay is pretty deep once you get into it nonetheless.

The tutorial will give you an insight into the mechanics of GCII but will not give you a 'walkthrough' on how to play it. That i'm affraid is down to you guys.
The tutorials are very good and full of important info but the game is just too big to cover everything and a lot will still be down to you guys to work out

In any case the best solution is just to play... and don't be afraid to ask.

There is plenty of good people around.

Don't worry, there will always be those who are more than willing to explain their theories about what works and what doesn't.

GC2 is really more complex than GC1 in only two areas. First, you have to design your own ships, and second, you have to think more about what you're placing on your colonies, since you can only have a certain number of tiles.

The tech tree is definitely easier to deal with. With few exceptions, there are branches for different areas of research, and they really don't cross too much. So it's not like in GC1 where you needed several seemingly-unrelated techs to reach a certain technology. On the other hand, ships are no longer dependant on a single tech, but on several, usually one per component, where the components consists of hull, engine, life support, weapons, and defenses, and sometimes sensors and other modules for trade/colonization/construction/invasion.
