Microsoft: Aero Glass to be final UI

Microsoft: Aero Glass to be final UI

No last minute major changes to Windows Vista interface

Back in 2001 Microsoft's early betas of Windows XP contained a user interface dubbed "Watercolor". But only months before the operating system shipped Microsoft completely replaced it with an entirely different look and feel called "Luna" which became known as "Windows XP Style".

That move has created speculation that current Windows Vista look and feel, called Aero glass, would be replaced by a different look and feel later in the beta process.

However, this week's PowerUser.TV podcast has an interview with Microsoft developers who have confirmed that there will be no major change to the look and feel of Windows Vista from what is being shown in build 5270. In other words, Aero-Glass is it.

I have an uncle that had the latest build, his computer could produce aero, but when I took a look around his pc. He had the personal style "smoke" he changed the glass opacity to 0% & contrast down to 0% as well.

I looked around with the style applied & it was just awsome, I love the look & feel. Really dark, slick, & sexy

I asked him wheater or not I could upload a screenshot but it seems microsoft has his soul in a bottle as well

Agreed. You could add, that MS being a multi-billion dollar company, and this is the best their designers could come up with in regards to a UI.

It just doesn't seem to be a priority for them at this point, and I assume they prefer not to rock the boat too far with regards to the billions of windows users out there. I'd love to take a crack at redesigning the windows interface head to head with Apple. And being Microsoft, they can even afford my rate.

True, but in reality, we all can't keep the same desktop for very long. No matter what Microsoft does, we will get sick of it fast.

Ain't that the truth. Us humans have short attention spans. personnaly, I burned out the Vista theme months ago

Well, I for one will be installing Vista & still using XP in a partitioned HDD set-up...I really don't care for the phlegmatic negative attitude most seem to be posting concerning V - it's been an incredible progression from even the earliest MS Luna Styles to what we have today in Xp....can't even imagine what V will look like a a few years.

It will look like windows 98 looks to you now.

Maybe it will be like the progression from Classic Winamp skins to Modern ones. No more regular boxes and everything being parallel to the rectangular screen.

We can only hope.

Bit off subject, but I have some more info on the Dec SDK http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=2297BDC9-B5AE-4B8A-B601-EEF54A52867A&displaylang=en Even though the installation wizard says XP Professional is required, I am told XP Home should work just fine. The trouble I am having installing the SDK is unrelated to the fact I am using XP Home, but is caused by a corrupted file--which I'm hoping to get resolved today.

I don't like the glass look but I'm not worried about it. Microsoft said it wouldn't change right? Sure you can trust Microsoft. Like I said I'm not worried, glass will most likely be changed in Vista, just look at Microsoft's track record.

Yeah, what's with all the close-up grass and plants for the wallpapers?

Shouldn't they show a far away view of something, seeing as how that's what 'Vista' means. Unless they're trying to be ironic. And if they are, that's lame.

My guess for all the close-ups of the grass & plants is that they are trying to make this OS seem more organic then previous ones.

I'm not really a fan of the whole "Aero-Glass" look, MS claims it makes the window less distracting (mind you I find it more distracting/annoying then ever before).
I just hope you can change the opacity of the window instead of it being transparent all the time.

I actually do find the aero style less distracting. I have a widescreen monitor and never have any window maximized (or very rarely). Once you get used to it, the borders just sort of disappear into the background, while maintaining their functionality. I'm sure I'll get sick of it too, but at this point I like it a lot. I've always been a fan of minimalistic WB skins, and at this point the aero look does the job. I want it to look good, but not distracting. Personally, I want my focus to be what's inside the window, not the window itself. Simple elegance is the key. It could be better (I'm not sure how), but it is certainly a lot less distracting than luna--again, once you are used to it and stop being distracted by the newness of the transparency. Despite all the customizing I do, the humble wallpaper still remains my favorite part. I like everything else to fade into the background. I use Arrow for WB, and aero skins for OD+, which fits the bill well.

Microsoft is only saying this so that they can gage the responses to determine their next move.

Here are my pleas:
Bring back watercolor too, please! Also, include Royale by default -- at least it looks better than Luna.

Most of all, have the first-run wizard (OOBE) ask people what style they want to use (along with substyles), and include previews of a sample desktop!

[EDIT: Oh, and hire Brewman! DogmaX (including all versions) rocks]

The wallpapers are going to be replaced, as I understand it. And most of the screensavers, though the marquee text one will continue.

Yeah, I think they could get rid of that 'Starfield' screen saver. That's probably older than I am.
