No Planet or ship graphics

Have not seen anything like this listed, nor reading the FAQ's did I run acrross that these were disabled, so here goes
Install game, clean install. Start new game, created new race, saved race. set everything to abundant and large for galaxy size. When game drops me to the 3D view, I am only able to see the small icons for the ships, and the circles that show how big the planet's population can be. If i double click on the ship, the info window has a miniture ship picture with all the textures on them, when I exit to game screen, only icons, even zoommed in all the way, still no larger images with textures show.

Driver version 8.1.9.8 just released this month.
