Attention Moms

"COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - Diapers are clogging up city sewage lines - and causing a smelly, messy problem for some residents. "It's a stinky case," said Mike Sciortino, assistant city attorney.

David and Jeanie Hansen know just how stinky.

David said he found four inches of sewage on his basement floor in October. He hauled out about 200 gallons that morning and called the city. Then things got really bad.

The cause of the Hansens' misery? According to the city, it likely is diapers that have been flushed down toilets.

Others on the same block as the Hansens also experienced similar problems a month earlier, Hansen said.

The Hansens have filed a claim with the city seeking nearly $18,000 to reimburse them for the damage."

I guess, the moms of yesteryear knew what they were doing when they used linen diapers to be sent out or washed in their machines. As long as they didn't leave the diaper in the toilet and flushed down accidentally.

We used cloth with our first 2, and disposables with the last 2.  But we never flushed them!  That is what the trash can is for.  Just dont stick your head in it and take a deep breath!

In Germany those things are recyclable. No kidding! I saw a big bin in the recycle yard labled, furniture, soiled diapers...among other things that can be thrown into one huge bin. Hmmm...maybe it was for bulk refuse, but why would it be in a recycle yard if it's not recyclable? Then again, if disposable diapers could be recycled, don't you think USA would have caught onto that by now?

I can't imagine anyone thinking it would be okay to flush a diaper. I can't imagine so many people doing this that it's a problem. I have been changing diapers for twelve long years and I've never flushed one. Maybe I'm just incredibly smart?
