Like what? All the techs are like this... Laser I = Laser IV except for the size of the component.

When you research the techs all you get is a period. I assume its a placeholder for descriptions to come later. It's a Beta after all.

To answer your questions, check the screen for making ships. You'll see the differences between laser 2 and laser 3.
Really its about how much size it packs in your hull, later advances will make it do more dmg. It's same for mini-balls and missiles and engines pretty much.

Sometimes you will get a weapon that does more damage in the same series (Harpoon IV, Mass Driver IV, etc). For the most part though, the differences in the weapons are size and cost. So weapon X will usually be smaller and/or cheaper than weapon X-1. Now, since the size is computed as a fixed size+a percentage of the base hull size, there are times you will see two components with identical stats on the smaller hull sizes, but there's usually a difference on the larger hull sizes.

Yep, Popup Target is right. I got confused by the same thing until I had the large hulls available. On Small and Tiny hulls you will see some techs that look like duplicates for cost/size/power.
