Windows bootup hangs during startup after upgrade

I upgraded several programs recently, including WB5, etc. and now my machine won't fully boot. It goes thru POST but does not complete the process of going through the startup. I can boot into safe mode and have disabled all startup programs as a test, but still can't fully boot in normal mode. For some reason I don't have any restore points so that isn't an option. I can bring up msconfig and have tried stopping services but no good. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Which programs?

bring up msconfig and have tried stopping services

Have you tried disabling Startup programs, turning ONE on at a time, until you've found the culprit?

restore points

Have you tired Last Known Good Configuration? If Restore points is not an option, you have turned of System Restore, sometime in the past. Last Known should work unless you have edited your registry and disabled it.

For now, this is all I can tell you. Hope it is helpful. Good luck!

If Last Known Good...., does not work:

Pull the programs (uninstall) from Safe Mode > reboot Windows normally > clean up any program folders and cache folders > reinstall one program at a time (rebooting between each install) to verify full loading.

For more on the cache folders and their locations, you can see mini tutorial here http://corkyo.wincustomize.com/Articles.aspx?SID=5463&AID=82461

Note - make sure to copy any skin/theme files to a temp folder before uninstalling, as well as unloading any program you are uninstalling.

No restore points means you have (or had) disabled the service in System Properties , MSConfig, or in Administrative Services.

Thanks much to the folks who tried to help me. I ended up uninstalling everthing and rebuiding the registry after deleting all of the leftover keys. Not sure what was the ultimate culprit but I'm back up and running. Still not sure as to root cause of the system restore problem - need to run that one down. No viruses or spyware were detected and the system is set to monitor.

Have you checked for rootkits? File from SysInternals, "rootkitrevealer.zip": http://www.sysinternals.com/Files/RootkitRevealer.zip
