Star base range display inconsistancy

1). What is the circle (blue for terrans?) that extends about 9 tiles around a selected star base? Does it represent the affective range of its upgrade modules, such as ship assistance (defensive or offensive), planetary production assistance, etc.?
2). The display of this circle is inconsistent, depending on how much the main view is zoomed in or out, where in the viewing area the star base is positioned, and where in the galaxy the star base is positioned (mine is a gigantic galaxy). (I sent 6 snap shots of this to Scott.) Sometimes there is a complete filled in circle, sometimes the circle is cut off (perhaps at sector borders?), and sometimes there is no circle at all.

To answer your first question.... yes. That circle is the 'sphere of influence' for any given star base.

And, according to Cari, it is the sphere of influence for the upgrade modules such as planetary production improvements and ship defense and offense capabilities.

Another note on the irregularity and inconsistancy of the circles. They happen the same time that the segments change as the view is moved around. As in the minor and major FOW changing colors. (Hhhmmm. I may have to think of a better way to describe the FOW color changes, as I find it very annoying.)

wow.. i always thought the effects were empire-wide.

is there an upgrade to make the starbases mobile? 75% of all resources are not within range of any decent planets.

You can always build starbases anywhere. You don't have to build them on resources. If you really want a starbase to support your colonies, just build one next to it

It's called a Terror Star. The ultimate military starbase. The revamping of how starbases work and the institution of distinct starbase sub-types probably means that resource mining starbases can never grow up to be Terror Stars.

I think that was referencing the resource starbases, and we don't get to pick where those go.

I've had that issue as well. I think the range on the resource starbases needs to be bumped up 25-50%, as even when I've got one in the heart of my empire with Abundant Everything, I'm lucky if I've got better than a Class 10 planet within range.

I dont think there should be an added range for resource starbases... they arent there to help you build faster products or make more money, they are there to boost a specific stat empire wide..... As Aloriel said, if you want to boost some colonies in production, or trade route income, build a star base in their range.

No, this thread originated as referencing the "range of affect" of star base upgrades other than for galactic resources. A star base built on a galactic resource, and the star base upgrade modules for "mining" those galactic resources (such as "mining baracks") apply empire wide. Star base upgrade modules that give planetary production assistance (such as "Phase 1 factory"), ship assistance, (such as "micro fighters", "inverse tractor beam", or "basic trading post"), or cultural impact (such as Foreign Relations Center") all are limited to the "range of affect" of the star base (although I think the influence generated by the cultural impact upgrades may have some diminishing affect as you move away from the star base's "range of affect" like it did in GC1).

In short, you can think of a star base's "range of affect" as being similar but better than how a star base in GC1 had a "range of affect" limited to a sector. Since GC2 no longer has the "hard" sector boundaries that GC1 had we get what appears to be a more realistic affect out of our star base upgrades.

I know that resource starbases applied empire wide in GC1, I'd heard (in one of Brad's interviews) that they didn't apply empire wide in GC2, however. Does anyone have a confirmation one way or the other? I've got a game in progress at home, maybe I'll destroy a few resource starbases just to see what happens.

Well, I did some more testing, and I know know that the resources are global, but at least the military resource doesn't work quite the way it did in GC1. It seems that the bonus a ship gets is fixed at the time the ship is completed. Because of this, my earlier tests that I thought confirmed the limited effect were invalid.

So, to quote Gilda Radner, "Nevermind."

What is a Terror Star? I have built a couple of terror Star Modules (and a 5000bc module too) but the benefits of doing so are not immediately obvious in the starbase window. It _sounds_ menacing and, well, terrifying, but I don't think the computer AI opponents are impressed by fear insipiring words.

The starbase becomes mobile, and it can attack (and destroy) a star system the same way you would attack a ship.

Most of the wierdness of the "range of influence" of a star base has been corrected on Beta 5, but one case still remains. If a star base's range is entirely within sectors that are turned black (I still don't understand the ratiounal for the changing color of the FOW and unexplored cover, which causes me continual problems) the range circle disappears entirely.
