Metaverse login failure found; fix herein

For those who like me have found themselves unable to login to the metaverse features in-game, I believe I've found a fix. Here's all you need to do:

1) Start up GC2
2) Begin a new game
3) CHOOSE TERRANS AS YOUR RACE!
4) Wait until the galaxy is all loaded up
5) Exit GC2

Thats all you should need to do. Next time you start GC2 up, it should work (at least it has for me). It seems that for some reason the metaverse failure is caused by having a non-human "last played" race recorded in your prefs.ini at the time GC2 is started. By starting a new game as the Terrans then exiting and restarting, that setting will be fixed and you should have access to the meta!

Note that you should be able to play as an alien in a meta game (I've not tested it that far yet), so long as you either play through in one session, or when you finish your game, save and exit, use the above fix, then start GC2 back up, load your game, and submit. Theoretically, it should work (off to find out for myself right now!).

To the devs: Hopefully this makes it very easy to discover the problem and get it fixed.

Strange! It started working for me after the last upgrade and I never have played the Terrans so my prefs.ini would always have an alien race in it.
But if it worked, it worked. It can't hurt to try.:/

All I can say is, if I start GC2 with terrans in prefs.ini, it works. If I start with an alien saved in there, it doesn't! It could well be there are other causes, and this is the only one that was affecting me. But hey, it's a start

Yes! It works.

Hmmm...I might be useful for someone to save a copy of their prefs.ini before they try this so they can send a copy of the both the before and after to Stardock so they can compare them.

Hmmm..I'm not sure if you are refering to Galactic Civilizations (the original) or GC2 which is being tested here. GC1 and the AP expansion are much better than MOO3 and they are still available for purchase (the forum and info is at www.galciv.com ). GC2 will also be much better than MOO3 and is scheduled for Spring '06 release.

Good catch Darth Kyro!   I'll pass this onto the devs working on the metaverse so they can get it fixed in code

This may not be the right thread for this, but whenever GC II minimizes to the toolbar and then expand it agein, it posts an error about a failed code and terminates. Must reload the game and pick up from the last autosave.

You're right, the devs would prefer you either post all your bug reports in the big "bug reports here" thread, or post each bug in it's own thread....

However, the problem you're talking about is known and it used to be alot worse. If you play in Windowed mode, you wont ever have that issue.

While, thanks to this thread, I can now log into the Metaverse, it still refuses to accept my game submissions. Details posted in the big Beta4 bug thread.

Well, from your description in the bug thread you seem to be having a different problem now... If I can get a game finished I'll check it out myself.

Yay! Just got zipped through a tiny 1vs1 cakewalk and it posted without a hitch, though it seems it hasn't shown up on the website (yet). Too bad that I can't load the 6k game I had saved but couldn't submit in b4a...

Last weekend I finished a game and, got the prompt to post to the metaverse, and successfully posted it. I then reloaded a different game I'd saved and it posted too, although it did so under a different metaverse character name, one that I'd created while having earlier metaverse posting problems. Then yesterday I finished another game, but got no prompt to post to the metaverse. I reloaded from the saved endgamesave, but again it wouldn't post. I can't tell what the difference was. I had logged into the metaverse when starting all 3 games, and was playing as humans in the last 2.
