Installation of Windowblinds 5 beta (4.9)

When the beta was first released to subscribers, I had similar problems to those that have install/upgrade problems. I wonder if the sequence of downloading has anything to do with it. The reason I ask myself this is because, when I did do an OS re-install recently as many who have problems, when it came to OD I used the SDC to do it. I downloaded and installed ONE at a time, first 4.6, then the skins and extras, THEN the beta 5. I had tried it three times and would get classic skin only, until I did it this way. I had read some threads that stated the beta had problems with making itself known to the SDC program that indeed an upgrade was installed. I stated in another thread that I wondered what the commonality was, I meant other than it being Windowblinds. Most of these problem threads include re-installing XP SP2. I know that some, like me, tweak things to get more out their systems, and sometimes don't install all of the OS. Anymore when installing or re-installing, I will elect to install the FULL installable version, then turn services/modules etc off as I don't need them according to what other software I might run. Example being you need workstation service running if you use a VPN to connect to the internet-dependencies is what I think I am getting to.
I don't have extensive knowledge of coding or programming, so excuse me of that.

When migrating from WB4.x to WB5 Beta, it is necessary you uninstall v4.x before installing v5 Beta. When making upgrades within the same general release, you do not need to uninstall/reinstall as only the updated files will be overwritten.

I, myself, disable many services and remove many Windows features I don't need to have my system running optimally and have not noticed any issue running WindowBlinds. The best reference tool for Windows services has unfortunately been down (since Sep 21 '05, my b-day): http://www.blackviper.com/. You could find descriptions of most Windows services there, including a template of recommended services depending on what kind of workstation it would be (server, home, optimized, etc).

In most cases, performing a repair install should resolve the issue; formatting and reinstalling from scratch shouldn't be a last resort, but an absolute last resort.  I've had to go this far only a few times in my PC repair career.  (Doesn't hurt though if you don't mind losing everything--it's the most efficient cleaning method)

Thanks Mike, BlackViper site is under construction. I usually hit PCstats, Winguides, the softwarepatch and Neowin when doing a re-install of my whole system. I'll be waiting for BV to finish, just to check out what you reference as the best tool for windows services. Thanks again for your response. Happy skinning.

Now you tell us . .       Shouldn't SDC handle this as one operation?  Also why does 4.6 keep showing up in SDC after the 5 upgrade?

Try Vernalex for the services breakdown. Link He lurks around here at times too.

Either BV's been down a lot longer than you think or he got it back up and then went down again. I've been seeing the under construction sign for something like 9 months to a year now.

Believe me, I've requested this myself

This is due to the fact that both WB4.x and WB5Beta are installed in the same directory. I unfortunately don't have a date for when a fix might be available for this one, though there might not be one, as WB5 will be released fairly soon.

All I heard was that he had to take his site down in September because he was moving (guess he was running it off his basement computer).  I haven't actually visited his site in a very long time as I've not had a need to look up services.

Mike, I had previously uninstalled both WB4 and WB5 beta when I first discovered that SDC didn't hsndle this. (Although it has handled it in all other instances for me).

This latest fiasco was via SDC with WB4 NOT installed and WB5's previous beta running fine. And the new SDC version didn't just bork my latest WB5 beta installation, but the latest Skin Studio Pro beta installation also. First it claims that SDC cannot verify your registration, then it just throws unspecified errors on subsequent attampts.

Uninstalling both Skin Studio Pro and WB5 and then reinstalling both seems to have resolved the issue - for now...
